How important is the Blood of Jesus?

Hebrews 9:11-26

Note: This is not only a salvation message, but a life application message for Christians who have forgotten the simple truth of the cross, and the need for shedding of blood.

Introduction

This morning, we are going to examine the reason for the sacrifice on the cross.

I mentioned this last week, but did not elaborate to much – and felt led to talk more about the covenant Jesus established WITH God, FOR us.

It is sad, but some in our churches today simply do not understand the importance of the blood sacrifice that Jesus made – nor do they acknowledge the reason for their salvation is BECAUSE of the blood sacrifice.

It is important that we understand this sacrifice in a way that we can not only apply it to our life, but so that we can explain to a un-believer. Today, we are going to focus on the blood of Jesus, and what it ought to mean to your life.

Pray

Point 1 – Why do we need a blood covenant? (Read v12, 19-21)

When Moses made the original covenant establishing how redemption would happen, it was because of the sin that we had in ourselves.

Confession is good for the soul – and the first thing we need to do is understand who we are not, and who God is. God established these covenants with us because His desire was so strong that He could be in our lives that He had to provide a way.

This morning, the first thing we have to do is admit that we are sinners. Can you admit that? Can you say with me, “I am a sinner”?

Jesus did not enter into the presence of God the way Moses had to, and Paul is trying to ensure that we understand this. There is no other way to the Father but through Jesus Christ (John 14:6) – and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Moses understood this commandment because he understood God’s plan for His creation – He understood that God wants us around – that God desires to be in our lives – and so he agreed to show us the way of forgiveness.

Understand this – your sin owes a debt (Romans 6:23 “For the wages …”), a debt of death and there is no other way to get forgiveness than to die – but in this case, God established with Moses the blood covenant.

Moses sprinkled all that belonged to God (the scroll, the altar, the tabernacle, the sanctuary, etc.) with the blood of the calves sacrificed to God.

In our lives, we require the blood to be sprinkled and applied to our hearts.

Look at verse 22 of Hebrews 9 – this is your Life Application for today.

Without the shedding of blood, there is NO forgiveness.

Jesus shed His blood so that we may be forgiven and be allowed in God’s presence – but without the application of blood on your heart – you will never see Heaven.

Eternal redemption is the key here – without it you are doomed to a place called hell of which Jesus spoke clearly that there is no escape from.

The rich man could not reach Lazarus, and Lazarus could not reach down to help.

Quit playing church – quit trying to say all the right things and understand this. Without the acceptance of the shedding of blood on your behalf, you will never be free.

Can you say with me, “I need to be free!!”?

Do you? Do you really require the freedom of Jesus Christ?

If you have any doubt, this morning let me tell you that if you are ever going to do anything for the Lord, without accepting the blood of Jesus as a sacrifice for your sins you will NEVER succeed. (Expound …)

Ask yourself: What do you need this morning?

Do you need the blood applied to your life?

Do you need the freshness of the anointing to fall in your life?

Do you need the wisdom, grace, and peace of our Lord?

These desires and needs are only fulfilled by the blood!

Point 2 – What is the importance? (Read v15, 24-26)

Genesis Chapter 3 describes the first covenant – the covenant between God and man.

Let’s just admit this and confess it now – we blew it. Our sin is the reason Jesus had to come and die. Our sin is the reason we need redemption and we need a Savior.

Because Jesus died on the cross, because He gave His life as a ransom for yours – He is the creator of the NEW covenant! This is why He has all authority to judge the living and the dead. This is why he has been given all authority from the Father! How do you show your gratefulness to Him?
