Psalm 8:1-9 How Excellent is Your Name

I. The Lord’s Preeminence - 1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

i. The Glory of His Person - literally saying, “O Jehovah our Adonai.” Jehovah is God’s personal name, the eternal and self-existent one. Adonai refers to the Lord being our master and owner.

ii. of His Presence - how excellent is thy name in all the earth

“Son, I'll give you a quarter if you can tell me where God is.”

boy replied, “I'll give you a dollar if you can tell me where He ain't.”

iii. of His Position - who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

II. The Lord’s Power -

i. His Conquest - 2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings

hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies,

that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

ii. Creation - 3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers

iii. His Control - the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

Jer 10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

III. The Lord’s Provision

1. His Mystery - 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him?

and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

i. His Creation of Us - What is man,

ii. His Care for us - that thou art mindful of him?

iii. His Coming To us - and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

2. His Ministry - 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Philippians 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

3. His Majesty - 6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

4. His Monarchy -

9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
