Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon explores our calling to bear witness to Christ's truth, guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit, and the transformative power this brings.
Good morning, beloved family of faith. We find ourselves gathered here today in the warm embrace of our shared belief, a sacred bond that unites us all. As we come together in the spirit of love, unity, and the pursuit of divine truth, we are reminded of the great commission that is entrusted to us as followers of Christ. We are called to carry the gospel, to be the bearers of the good news, the torchbearers of the divine light that illuminates the path of righteousness.
Today, we are going to immerse ourselves in the profound wisdom that the book of John holds for us. We will focus on the empowering force of the Holy Spirit and the transformative power it bestows upon us. We are called to be witnesses, not just passive observers, but active participants in the divine narrative of salvation.
As we reflect on the words of John 15:26-27, we are reminded of the immense responsibility that has been placed upon us. We are called to carry the gospel, to share the good news of Christ's life, death, and resurrection. This is not a task to be taken lightly, but rather, it is a divine commission that requires our utmost dedication and commitment.
The first aspect of this commission that we must understand is that it is not a task assigned to a select few. It is not just the responsibility of pastors, ministers, or church leaders. Rather, it is a commission given to each and every one of us who have accepted Christ as our Savior. We are all called to be bearers of the gospel, to share the good news with those around us.
This is a profound responsibility, for it requires us to live out our faith in a visible and tangible way. We cannot simply profess our faith in words; we must also demonstrate it through our actions. We must strive to live in a manner that reflects the love, grace, and mercy of Christ. We must be willing to serve others, to show kindness and compassion, and to stand up for justice and righteousness.
The second aspect of this commission is that it is not a task to be undertaken alone. We are not left to our own devices, struggling to figure out how to share the gospel in a world that often seems hostile to its message. Instead, we are promised the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, as Jesus tells us, is the Spirit of truth. He is the one who will guide us into all truth, who will help us understand the teachings of Christ and apply them to our lives. He is the one who will empower us to bear witness to Christ, to share the good news with boldness and conviction.
The third aspect of this commission is that it is not a task with a finite end. We are not called to share the gospel once and then consider our job done. Rather, we are called to be continual witnesses to Christ, to constantly share the good news through our words and actions.
This means that our commission to carry the gospel is not just about evangelism in the traditional sense. It is not just about sharing the gospel with those who have not heard it. It is also about continually bearing witness to Christ in our daily lives, in the way we treat others, in the decisions we make, and in the values we uphold.
The fourth aspect of this commission is that it is not a task without reward. While it may be challenging and even daunting at times, the rewards of carrying the gospel are immeasurable.
When we share the good news of Christ, we are participating in the divine narrative of salvation. We are playing a part in God's grand plan for the redemption of the world. And in doing so, we are not only bringing others into the kingdom of God, but we are also drawing closer to God ourselves. We are growing in our understanding of His love, His grace, and His mercy. We are becoming more like Christ, and in the process, we are experiencing the joy and peace that comes from a deep and abiding relationship with our Savior.
