INTRODUCTION:
Holiness is not limited to our actions but is also reflected in our words. Communication is a powerful tool that can build up or tear down. As believers, we are called to ensure that our words align with God’s standards of righteousness. Holiness in communication involves speaking words that glorify God, edify others, and reflect the transformation of our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
1. THE POWER OF WORDS
a) Words Carry Life or Death
Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that the tongue holds the power of life and death.
b) Words Reflect the Heart
Jesus teaches that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34).
c) Words Build or Destroy
Words have the power to encourage or discourage (Ephesians 4:29).
d) Words Influence Others
Our communication can shape the beliefs and behaviours of those around us (James 3:5-6).
e) Biblical Example: The spies in Numbers 13 used words that instilled fear and unbelief in the Israelites, leading to rebellion.
2. CHARACTERISTICS OF HOLY COMMUNICATION
a) Truthful
Holy communication is free from lies and deception (Proverbs 12:22).
b) Edifying
Our words should build up others and not tear them down (Ephesians 4:29).
c) Seasoned with Grace
Our speech should reflect the grace and kindness of God (Colossians 4:6).
d) Free from Corruption
Holy communication avoids foul language, gossip, and slander (Ephesians 5:4).
e) Biblical Example: Jesus’ words brought life and encouragement to the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:7-26).
3. HINDRANCES TO HOLINESS IN COMMUNICATION
a) Gossip and Tale-Bearing
Speaking negatively about others spreads discord and dishonours God (Proverbs 16:28).
b) Harsh and Hurtful Words
Words spoken in anger or frustration can wound others deeply (Proverbs 15:1).
c) Flattery and Deceit
Misusing words for selfish gain is displeasing to God (Psalm 12:2-3).
d) Complaining and Ungratefulness
Constant complaining reflects a lack of trust in God (Philippians 2:14).
e) Biblical Example: Miriam and Aaron’s words against Moses brought God’s judgment upon them (Numbers 12:1-10).
4. PRACTICAL WAYS TO MAINTAIN HOLINESS IN COMMUNICATION
a) Guard Your Heart
Keep your heart pure, as your words flow from it (Proverbs 4:23).
b) Think Before You Speak
Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger (James 1:19).
c) Speak the Truth in Love
Communicate honestly but with gentleness and respect (Ephesians 4:15).
d) Pray for Wisdom and Grace
Ask God to guide your words and give you wisdom in your speech (Psalm 19:14).
e) Biblical Example: Daniel spoke with wisdom and tact when addressing King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 2:14-16).
5. BLESSINGS OF HOLINESS IN COMMUNICATION
a) Brings Glory to God
Speaking rightly honours God and reflects His holiness (Matthew 5:16).
b) Builds Healthy Relationships
Godly communication fosters peace and unity (Romans 12:18).
c) Strengthens Faith
Words of encouragement can uplift and strengthen others in their faith (Hebrews 10:25).

Righteous words draw God’s blessings (Proverbs 22:11).
