V. SERMONIC THEME: HEALING WOMEN’S EMOTION
VI. INTRODUCTION: … According to a book entitled “Women’s Encyclopedia of Health & Emotional Healing” … Historically, women have not been treated kindly by the established medical profession, neither as health care consumers, nor as health care providers, nor as subjects of medical research … In fact Lila A. Wallis, M.D., clinical professor of medicine at Cornell University Medical College in New York City, and Perri Klass, M.D., research fellow in pediatric infectious diseases at Boston City Hospital … Women have repeatedly complained that their doctors don’t take them seriously, that their symptoms are cast aside as being imaginary or “psychosomatic.’ “
Dr. Wallis and Dr. Klass point out that when it comes to diseases that affect both men and women, studies are often done on all-male groups and the results generalized to women, “as if men were truly the generic humans.” Consider these studies funded by the National Institutes of Health.
1. Research on the prevention of heart disease (including the use of low doses of aspirin) involved the long-term monitoring of 40,000 men, even though heart disease is the number one killer of women, too.
2. A report called Normal Human Aging was based entirely on men.
3. The famous concept of the Type-A personality (the ambitious, aggressive workaholic) was developed from a study of 4,000 California businessmen.
Maybe even worse is the dearth of research money devoted to the study of women’s health issues. According to the Federal General Accounting Office, the National Institutes of Health spends less than 13 percent on women’s health issues, less than 2 percent on obstetrics and gynecology and less than 0.5 percent on basic breast cancer research.
