HE IS MIGHTY TO SAVE
August 31, 2025
God is with You and God is for You! He is the Mighty One who saves. (Luke 4 when Jesus was in the temple) …and the scroll of the Prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” The Prophet Zephaniah also spoke of the year of the Lord’s favor saying, “The great day of the LORD is near.” He proclaims that in that day, “The Lord your God will be in the midst of you. He is the Mighty One who will save.” Zephaniah is the only prophet descended from royal blood as the great grandson of King Hezekiah. So, he prophesies about the Messiah, the coming King that will bring judgement and salvation. When Jesus began His earthly ministry the Year of the Lord’s favor began and will continue until His Kingdom has fully come and He sits on His throne on earth for a thousand years. The bible says in verse 17 He will REJOICE over us, in verse 18 He will remove our REPROACH our shame and in verse 20 He will RESTORE us to our rightful positions among the nations.
The Rejoicing - He will take great delight in you. He rejoices with Joy! - you can't tell everyone, everything but God rejoices with Joy! Men can be jealous of your blessing! Example of travel and how people will miss the message because they are so jealous of the messenger. But Jesus said in John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Nehemiah and Ezra said (8:10) to Israel, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
Zephaniah says, God will quiet us with His love! - God does not depend on us for our love to give us peace, but He rests in His own love! His love is enough for us! Your love may not be enough to calm your fears, so he does not calm you with your love, He calms you with HIS Love! Romans 5:6-8 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(He will rejoice over you with singing) there is song that I have yet to hear, and it is the song of my God, the song he sings for me! I don't know the words, but I hope it has some, "Well Done" and some “Rest from your labors” and some "Come on up a little higher"
The Reproach - Zephaniah tells us about what God will do to remove our shame! I will deal with all who afflicted you. We need to remember what God said to King Jehoshaphat, “The battle is not yours, but the Lords!” It’s not about what we’ve done, but about what He did to save us! In verses 19 and 20 in a series of six I WILL statements God promises Restoration, Renewal and Return! I will REMOVE your shame; I will DEAL with your enemy; I will RESCUE the weak; I will GATHER the exile; I will GIVE you honor; I will BRING you home!
The Restoration – Yes! God said, “I will bring you back!” The poet Cory Asbury once wrote, “There's no shadow You won't light up, Mountain You won't climb up, Coming after me! There's no wall You won't kick down, Lie You won't tear down, Coming after me!” Family, there is no limit to Gods love for you. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
