Summary: Belshazzar died because he did not glorify God. Be sure this doesn’t happen to you!

Elders are told to be humble, as Peter addresses us in 1 Pet. 5.6.

We’re told to become like little children, by the Master- Matt. 18.4- that’s quite a tall order, it seems.

Jesus, Himself, went through a period of 40 days of humbling in the wilderness. It was imperative that he confirms his utter dependence on God, His father, prior to this ministry. Now, was there really any question about this? I don’t believe so. However, he demonstrated, in his doing what Adam and Eve should have done, that he was, indeed, the one to take the throne of the earth. He did what they did not have the vision or character to do. Eve was deceived; Adam acted willfully. They set us on a course that is only righted through Jesus and His multiple victories over the enemy of God and God’s work. Without question, Jesus’ 40 days of humbling in the wilderness is the example from which the historical church has drawn the practice of humbling of ourselves prior to celebrating Christ’s death and life-imparting resurrection. It’s a good parallel; it’s a good pattern. These are the days for that humbling and confirmation.

Think of Belshazzar. Think of Jesus. Won’t you please just glorify God today? As the song says, “He is more precious than silver or gold.” “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Ro. 3.23). We, as humans, fall so short of his glory. We just need to look around us to see and know his wonders. The trees, the birds, the flowers, the precious new babies are all God’s creations. These are all God’s creatures. We dare not forget. In fact, I advocate that we have a book, somewhere, where we keep track of God’s intervention in our lives. From that, we can draw whenever we might be feeling like glorifying ourselves.

Humble yourself before God. Consciously, go to Him and lay your life before Him. Glorify Him. Glorify Jesus. Glorify the Spirit. We’ll never go wrong doing that. Belshazzar didn’t, and look what happened. We don’t want to lose what God has given us, as he did. Be sure that it doesn’t have to happen to you- glorify God.

In this season of preparation for the single most important salvation event that ever occurred- Christ’s death and resurrection- set aside time to glorify God. It ought not to only be here, in church. Take time, in prayer, to praise him. Put on some inspiring God-songs and sing along and pray along as God moves you to do. Allow the realization of who you are and who He is to come together. Pray before him. Cry before him. Sing before him. Be silent before him! Do whatever it takes, and take the time it takes, to let him know his place in your life…and to let you know his place in your life.
