Summary: God's purpose in discipline is MORE than just to instill righteousness-- it is for our good, and to demonstrate His great love for us.

Hebrews 13:4-11

The author calls the quotation regarding the Lord’s discipline- “encouragement”

TWO KEY POINTS:

1)Don’t Take God’s discipline lightly.

2) Don’t let God’s discipline discourage you!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GOD's DISCIPLINE!

a) God’s discipline is a demonstration of His love.

b) God’s discipline is a demonstration that you belong to the family.

c) God’s discipline has the purpose of bringing you to a place of increased respect for God.

d)God disciplines us for our own good- to instill holiness within us.

e) Discipline is not supposed to be pleasant, but its results are wonderful.

Example: A yong marine returning home from basic training stands taller, speaks more respectfully, is leaner and more prepared to face life and to fulfil his duties.

WHY DOES GOD DISCIPLINE US:

1) TO prepare us for service

2) To bring us to a place where we are ready to minister to others- the Biblical example of Joseph

3) To deal with our own character flaws and flawed thinking

SUMMARY: God never disciplines us to get even with us! He is working to sand off the rough edges, or chainsaw sin and character flaws from our lives... He is working to conform us into the image of Christ.
