INTRODUCTION:
God is a covenant-keeping God. Throughout Scripture, He is revealed as One who binds Himself by promises to His people. A covenant is more than a promise—it is a sacred, binding agreement initiated by God and rooted in His faithfulness and mercy. While men may break their word, God never violates His covenant.
From Adam to Abraham, Moses to David, and finally through Jesus Christ, God’s covenants have shaped the redemptive story of humanity. These covenants are not based on man’s merit but on God’s love and purpose. Understanding God as a covenant-keeping God will strengthen our faith, bring stability to our Christian walk, and deepen our trust in His Word.
In this sermon, we will explore what it means for God to be the God of Covenant, how He operates through covenants, and how we can walk confidently in covenant relationship with Him.
1. GOD INITIATES COVENANT RELATIONSHIPS
God always takes the first step in establishing covenants with mankind.
a) God Chose Abraham and Made a Covenant with Him (Genesis 17:1-2)
God revealed Himself and called Abraham into a binding relationship of blessing.
b) God’s Covenants Are Based on Grace, Not Works (Deuteronomy 7:7-8)
He chose Israel not because of merit but because of love and purpose.
c) God Remembers His Covenant Faithfully (Exodus 2:24)
He remembered His covenant with Abraham and came to deliver Israel from Egypt.
d) God’s Covenant Brings Identity and Purpose (Genesis 17:7)
He calls us His people and gives us an eternal inheritance.
Biblical Example: God initiated a covenant with Noah, promising never to destroy the earth again with a flood (Genesis 9:8-11).
2. GOD’S COVENANT CANNOT BE BROKEN
God is committed to keeping His covenant, regardless of human failure.
a) God’s Word Is His Bond (Psalm 89:34)
He will not break His covenant nor alter what has gone from His lips.
b) God’s Covenant Is Everlasting (Genesis 17:7)
It transcends generations and time.
c) God’s Covenant With David Was Rooted in His Faithfulness (2 Samuel 7:16)
Even when Israel stumbled, God preserved David’s lineage for the Messiah.
d) God's Covenant Cannot Be Revoked by Circumstances (Romans 11:29)
His gifts and calling are irrevocable.
Biblical Example: Despite Israel’s rebellion, God honoured His covenant with them and restored them repeatedly (Nehemiah 9:32).
3. JESUS CHRIST IS THE MEDIATOR OF A BETTER COVENANT
The New Covenant through Christ brings superior promises and eternal access to God.
a) Jesus Fulfils the Old Covenant and Establishes the New (Matthew 5:17)
He is the fulfilment of the Law and the Prophets.
b) The New Covenant Is Written on Our Hearts (Jeremiah 31:33)
It is internal, not just external—it transforms from within.
c) Jesus Shed His Blood to Seal the Covenant (Luke 22:20)
The covenant was sealed with His sacrifice on the cross.
d) Believers Now Have Direct Access to God Through Christ (Hebrews 8:6)
Jesus is the High Priest of a better covenant, built on better promises.
Biblical Example: At the Last Supper, Jesus declared the cup as the new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:20).
4. WALKING IN THE REALITY OF GOD’S COVENANT TODAY
We must live daily with the awareness and responsibility of being in covenant with God.
a) Obedience Activates Covenant Blessings (Deuteronomy 28:1-2)
Those who obey God’s commands walk in the fullness of His promises.
b) Faith Connects Us to the Covenant (Galatians 3:14)
We receive the blessing of Abraham through faith in Christ.
c) Covenant Requires Loyalty and Faithfulness (Deuteronomy 29:9)
Keep the words of the covenant to prosper in all you do.
d) Covenant Brings Security in Every Season (Isaiah 54:10)
Even if mountains are removed, His covenant of peace shall not be shaken.
Biblical Example: Jonathan and David honoured their covenant, and David later remembered Mephibosheth for Jonathan’s sake (2 Samuel 9:1-7).
CONCLUSION:
The God of Covenant is dependable, unchanging, and eternally faithful. His covenants are not rooted in emotions or temporary actions—they are established on His character and His Word. As believers in Christ, we are part of the New Covenant sealed by the blood of Jesus.
Let this truth give you confidence in prayer, peace in trials, and power in purpose. Whatever God has spoken concerning your life, He will bring to pass because He is a covenant-keeping God. Embrace His promises, walk in obedience, and hold on to your covenant inheritance without wavering.
