Explores the depth of God's gracious love, His gift to sinners, and His unshakeable promises.
Good morning, church family. I trust you all are well and blessed. It's a joy to gather here today, in this sanctuary, under the banner of Christ's love. There's a warmth in this place, a warmth that emanates from the love we share in Christ Jesus, our Lord. A love so profound, so divine, it transcends our human understanding.
Today, we turn our hearts and minds to the eighth chapter of Romans, verses 31 to 39. A passage that echoes with the resounding truth of God's love, His gift, and His guarantee. As we open our hearts to receive this truth, may we remember the words of Ann Tatlock, who said, "Here's the paradox. We can fully embrace God's love only when we recognize how completely unworthy of it we are."
Let's read together from Romans 8:31-39:
"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: 'For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.' No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Isn't that powerful? Isn't that reassuring? Isn't that just what our souls need to hear in these challenging times?
So today, we will be focusing on three main points: God's Gracious Love, God's Gift to Sinners, and God's Guarantee for His People. Each point a testament to His unfailing love, His unmerited favor, and His unshakeable promises.
But before we proceed, let us bow our heads in prayer.
In the heart of the passage we read, we find a profound declaration of love. A love that is not ordinary, not fleeting, not conditional. This love is from God, the creator of the universe, the author of life. It's a love that is gracious, a love that is given freely, without merit, without us earning it. It's a love that is so deep, so wide, so high, that it surpasses our human understanding.
This love is an action: It's a love that moved God to do something unimaginable, something unthinkable. He didn't spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all. Imagine that! The creator of the universe, giving up His most precious possession, His only Son, for us, mere mortals. That's the extent of God's gracious love.
Why would God do that?: Why would He go to such lengths for us? The answer is simple, yet profound. God did it because He loves us. Not because we are lovable, not because we are good, not because we deserve it. No, He did it while we were still sinners, while we were still His enemies. That's the nature of God's gracious love. It's a love that loves the unlovable, a love that forgives the unforgivable, a love that saves the unsavable.
This gracious love is a present reality: It's a love that is still at work today, a love that is still reaching out to us, still drawing us closer to God. It's a love that is not deterred by our failures, not discouraged by our weaknesses, not diminished by our sins. It's a love that is patient, a love that is kind, a love that keeps no record of wrongs.
This gracious love is for everyone: It's for the rich and the poor, the young and the old, the saint and the sinner. It's a love that knows no boundaries, a love that knows no limits, a love that knows no end. It's a love that is inclusive, a love that is inviting, a love that is irresistible.
This gracious love is a guarantee: It's a love that assures us that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Not trouble, not hardship, not persecution, not famine, not nakedness, not danger, not sword. Not death, not life, not angels, not demons, not the present, not the future, not any powers, not height, not depth, not anything else in all creation. That's the security of God's gracious love. It's a love that is secure, a love that is sure, a love that is steadfast.
