INTRO.- There is good news and there is bad news.
ILL.- Good news/bad news. An old man visits his doctor and after thorough examination the doctor tells him: "I have good news and bad news, what would you like to hear first?"
Patient: "Well, give me the bad news first." Doctor: "You have cancer, I estimate that you have about two years left."
Patient: "OH NO! That's awful! In two years my life will be over! What kind of good news could you probably tell me, after this???" Doctor: "You also have Alzheimer's. In about three months you are going to forget everything I told you."
God be true and every man a liar. The good news is that God is true. He is always true. His word is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life and no man comes to the Father except through Him. And Jesus always told the truth.
Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.”
Jesus told the truth about prayer. Of course, He told the truth about everything. It is true that some people like to pray just so other people can hear them pray. And that’s the only reward they’ll receive. Whereas others pray quietly and often in seclusion and God knows they are sincere and will reward them for being honest and sincere.
Matthew 11:11 “I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
Now, how could this be true since John of Baptizer was a true and humble prophet of God? The idea is that those in the kingdom of heaven were greater than John who was alive at that time and those in the kingdom of heaven are greater than any human person on earth no matter how great he or she is!
How great is the greatness of heaven over earth? No pain. No sorrow. No crying. No death. A new body like the glorious body of Jesus. We shall be greater in heaven than the greatest person on earth no matter how great or spiritual they are. JESUS TOLD THE TRUTH! It’s no wonder we should be looking forward to heaven!
I have often said at the funeral of those who have gone on to be with the Lord that they are better off than we who are left behind! And it’s true because Jesus said so!
2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
Scripture is the word of truth. You can take the words of scripture to the bank and bet your life on them!
The good news is that God is true and everything He said in His Word is true, but the bad news is that every man is a liar. We’ve all lied about something and this makes us all sinners. We’ve all sinned and come short of the glory of God. God is true, pure, right and holy, but man is a liar, a sinner, a scoundrel. If we could see ourselves with the eyes we’d understand this truth.
PROP.- God is true, right and holy but we humans are not.
1- The bad news - we’re all under sin
2- The good news - righteousness comes through Jesus
I. THE BAD NEWS - WE’RE ALL UNDER SIN
9 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” 13 “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” 14 “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and misery mark their ways, 17 and the way of peace they do not know.” 18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
The bad news is all bad! There is nothing good about it.
It’s like that one lady who wasn’t willing to confess her faith in Christ, and confess that she was sinner before she was baptized. Her preacher asked her repeat a prayer, “Lord, I’m confess that I’m no good sinner and I need to be forgiven...”
