Go! And Trust in the Lord - Psalm 46:1-2

Introduction

Today, we are going to explore a powerful truth found in Psalm 46:1-2. This passage speaks of God as our refuge and strength, a help in times of trouble.

Psalm 46:1-2 (NLT) says: "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea."

In a world filled with uncertainties, chaos, and struggles, where do we turn? How do we find security? This passage reminds us that God is our ultimate source of protection and stability.

Today, we will unpack three key truths from this passage:

God is Our Refuge – He is our safe place.

God is Our Strength – He empowers us.

God is Always Present to Help – He never abandons us.

Point 1: God is Our Refuge

The psalmist begins by declaring that God is our refuge. The Hebrew word for "refuge" is machseh (?????????), which means shelter, a place of safety and security. This conveys the idea that God is like a strong fortress where we can find peace amid the storms of life.

Proverbs 18:10 "The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe."

The "name of the Lord" represents His character and authority. In ancient times, city walls provided protection from enemies, but the psalmist reminds us that God Himself is our true stronghold.

When life feels overwhelming, where do you turn? Do you run to God or try to solve things on your own? God invites us to take refuge in Him through prayer, worship, and trust.

Imagine a child running to their father during a thunderstorm, seeking safety in his embrace. Just as a father protects his child, God is our refuge from life's storms.

Corrie Ten Boom, a survivor of the Holocaust, once said, "Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God." We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know Who holds tomorrow.

Point 2: God is Our Strength

The psalmist continues by saying God is our strength. The Hebrew word for "strength" is oz (????), which refers to might, power, and fortitude. This means that God is not only our place of safety but also the One who strengthens us to endure trials.

Isaiah 40:29 "He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless."

The prophet Isaiah speaks to a weary people, reminding them that God's strength is limitless and available to those who trust Him.

When you feel exhausted—emotionally, physically, or spiritually—remember that God's strength is available to you. Rely on His power, not your own.

A lamp shines only when plugged into a power source. Likewise, we can only shine in our Christian walk when we remain connected to God's strength.

Pastor Charles Spurgeon said, "When God strengthens you, He does not take away the burden, but He gives you a stronger back to bear it." Rely on His strength!

Point 3: God is Always Present to Help

Psalm 46:1 declares that God is "always ready to help in times of trouble." The Hebrew word for "help" is ezrah (??????), meaning assistance or divine aid. This reminds us that God is actively involved in our lives.

Hebrews 13:5 "For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’"

This verse reassures believers that no matter what they face, God’s presence remains steadfast.

When trials come, do not believe the lie that God has forsaken you. He is always with you, guiding and strengthening you.

A lifeguard never leaves their post when swimmers are in the water. Likewise, God is always watching over us, ready to help when we call on Him.

Billy Graham once said, "God never takes away all our troubles; He walks with us through them." Trust in His ever-present help.

Psalm 46:1-2 provides us with a powerful reminder that in every trial and challenge:
