Go! And Know the Truth: Christians and Muslims Do Not Worship the Same God - John 14:6

INTRODUCTION: TRUTH THAT DIVIDES

Today, I come to you not with a message of condemnation, but of clarity. Not with arrogance, but with urgency. There are conversations happening across the world and even within the Church that ask the question: Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God? My answer—grounded in Scripture, shaped by the Spirit, and submitted to the supremacy of Christ—is a resounding No.

In a world that prizes unity at the expense of truth, we must lovingly but boldly declare that truth matters. And more than that, eternal life depends upon the right knowledge of who God is. Jesus didn’t come to start another religion. He came to reveal the Father and offer eternal salvation. And He said something scandalous, powerful, and true.

I. THE EXCLUSIVE CLAIM OF CHRIST

John 14:6 (NLT): "Jesus told him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.'"

Jesus is speaking to His disciples at the Last Supper. He’s about to go to the cross, and He comforts them with the promise of heaven. But when Thomas asks how they’ll know the way, Jesus responds with this definitive statement—I AM the way, not a way.

In Greek, “ego eimi he hodos kai he aletheia kai he zoe”. The use of “ego eimi” (??? e?µ?) echoes the divine name of God in Exodus 3:14—"I AM WHO I AM." Jesus is identifying Himself as God, not just a prophet, teacher, or messenger.

Christian, this isn’t just theology—it’s your foundation. If Jesus is the only way, there is no other path to God. Islam denies this. Islam rejects that Jesus is God. It denies His crucifixion and resurrection. Therefore, it is not a different path to the same God—it is a different god altogether.

John Piper said: "The glory of Christ is the image of the invisible God. If you do not honour Christ for who He is, you do not honour God."

Piper reminds us: to know God, we must know Jesus. Not as a prophet. Not as a wise teacher. But as Lord and Saviour. Islam does not honour Christ as God—and so it cannot honour the true God.

II. THE TRUE IDENTITY OF JESUS

Colossians 1:15–20 (NLT): "Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.

He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation...

God in all His fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him God reconciled everything to Himself..."

The Greek term “eikon” (e????), meaning “image,” doesn’t imply resemblance alone—it means manifestation. Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God. Islam teaches that God has no son, no image, and that associating partners with God (shirk) is the greatest sin.

But Scripture says that God revealed Himself in Jesus. The deity of Christ is not optional—it is essential.

If someone says, “I believe in God but not in Jesus,” they do not believe in the God of the Bible. If Jesus is not God, then Christianity is false. If Jesus is God, then every other system that denies Him is false.

R.T. Kendall said: "If Jesus is not God, then we have no Gospel. If He is, then the Gospel is everything."

R.T. lays it bare—Jesus must be central. Without His divinity, there is no salvation. The Gospel is not about man reaching God, but God reaching man through Christ!

III. DIFFERING GODS, DIFFERING GOSPELS

Galatians 1:6–9 (NLT): "I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God...

You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.

Let God’s curse fall on anyone... who preaches a different kind of Good News..."

Paul’s warning here is clear. Even in the early church, there were distortions of the Gospel. Islam preaches a different gospel. It teaches works-based salvation, denies the cross, and replaces Jesus with Muhammad.

The Arabic word Allah simply means “God,” but the character and identity of Allah in Islamic theology do not match the God revealed in Jesus.

You may have Muslim friends. Love them. Honour them as image-bearers of God. But do not be deceived into thinking we believe the same. Truth spoken in love is not intolerance—it’s mercy.

Tim Keller said: "Tolerance isn’t about not having beliefs. It’s about how your beliefs lead you to treat people who disagree with you."

Keller hits the heart—truth and love must walk hand in hand. We must be clear in our doctrine and kind in our delivery.

IV. WHY THE CROSS MATTERS

1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT): "The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God."
