Summary: These are thoughts on Genesis Chapter Two. In his work, "What does every Bible chapter say..." John Hunt gives an overview of each chapter of the Bible. It is my intention to do the same thing here.
GENESIS CHAPTER TWO OVERVIEW
Overall what is happening in this chapter is that man is placed in the garden and is given work to do and is also given a companion to help him.

Thomas Coke (1801) – Genesis Chapter 2
God ceasing from all his works, blesses the seventh day: plants the Garden of Eden: interdicts man from the tree of knowledge: and forms Eve from the side of Adam.
Joseph Benson (1857) – Genesis 2
This chapter is an appendix to the history of the creation, explaining and enlarging upon that part of it which relates immediately to man. We have in it,
(1) The institution of the Sabbath, which was made for man, to further his holiness and comfort, Genesis 2:1-3.
(2) A more particular account of man’s creation, as the summary of the whole work, Genesis 2:4-7.
(3) A description of the Garden of Eden, and the placing of man in it under the obligations of a law and covenant, Genesis 2:8-17.
(4) The creation of the woman, her marriage to the man, and the institution of the ordinance of marriage, Genesis 2:18-25.
Matthew Henry (1714) – Genesis 2
This chapter is an appendix to the history of the creation, more particularly explaining and enlarging upon that part of the history which relates immediately to man, the favorite of this lower world. We have in it:
I. The institution and sanctification of the Sabbath, which was made for man, to further his holiness and comfort (Genesis 2:1-3).
II. A more particular account of man's creation, as the center and summary of the whole work (Genesis 2:4-7).
III. A description of the Garden of Eden, and the placing of man in it under the obligations of a law and covenant (Genesis 2:8-17).
IV. The creation of the woman, her marriage to the man, and the institution of the ordinance of marriage (Genesis 2:18, etc.).
KEY VERSE
Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.
KEY EVENT
The seventh day was special – even God put it aside as a day of rest.
KEY BIBLE REFERENCE
In verse 9 we find the first mention to the “tree of life.” We will find the tree of life again in the Book of Revelation.
Revelation 22:1-2 Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
SPECIAL INSIGHTS
The creation of Eve was unique in all of God’s creation. One of Adam’s ribs was used in her creation. She is now a part of him.
At the end of this chapter the humans have maintained their innocence.
“The Sabbath and marriage were two ordinances instituted in innocency; the former for the preservation of the church, the latter for the preservation of the world of mankind.” Matthew Henry
QUOTE
“He (Adam) was not made of gold-dust, powder of pearl, or diamond dust, but common dust, dust of the ground.” Matthew Henry – (Genesis 2:7)
