FUNERAL SERMON: THE BLESSED HOPE OF THE BELIEVER
By Rev. Samuel Arimoro
Main Text:
John 14:1-3 (KJV)
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
INTRODUCTION:
The passing of a loved one is a reminder of how fragile life is. Even though we know death is inevitable, it still leaves us stunned and sorrowful. Grief is real, but God’s Word offers strength, comfort, and reassurance in moments like these.
Jesus, in His final words to His disciples, offered them hope when He said, “Let not your heart be troubled.” He wanted them to know that though He would be gone physically, they would be reunited again. This same assurance is given to us today.
As we reflect on the life of our dearly departed, we are reminded that death for a believer is not the end—it is a transition into eternal glory. Our hearts may be broken, but God promises that there is healing and peace available through Christ.
1. HEAVEN IS A PREPARED PLACE FOR PREPARED PEOPLE
Heaven is not a myth—it is a divine reality that awaits every believer. Jesus Himself declared that He has gone to prepare a place for us.
a) Jesus is the way to the Father (John 14:6)
Heaven is exclusive to those who come through Christ.
b) Eternal life is God’s gift to believers (Romans 6:23)
It is not earned but given to those who believe in Jesus.
c) Heaven is a place of peace and glory (Revelation 21:4)
There will be no more pain, sorrow, or death.
d) The righteous have a reward awaiting them (Matthew 25:34)
Those who serve God in this life will reign with Him in the next.
Biblical Example: Enoch walked with God and was taken—he did not see death (Genesis 5:24).
Let us live daily with Heaven in view, knowing we are just passing through this earth.
2. DEATH IS A DOORWAY, NOT A DESTINATION
For the believer, death is not the final chapter. It is a gateway into eternal life with Christ.
a) To be with Christ is far better (Philippians 1:23)
Paul longed to be with Jesus, knowing what glory awaits.
b) We have a heavenly body prepared for us (2 Corinthians 5:1)
Earthly bodies are temporary; heavenly ones are eternal.
c) Death is swallowed up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54)
Christ conquered death so we could live forever.
d) Believers are not lost—they’ve gone ahead (Hebrews 12:1)
They are part of the great cloud of witnesses.
Biblical Example: Lazarus was comforted in Abraham’s bosom after death (Luke 16:22).
Death is not goodbye forever; it is “see you later” for those in Christ.
3. GOD IS OUR PRESENT HELP IN TIMES OF GRIEF
Though we mourn, we are not alone. God is with us and offers comfort to every grieving soul.
a) He binds up the broken-hearted (Psalm 147:3)
God specialises in healing emotional wounds.
b) The Holy Spirit intercedes for us (Romans 8:26)
He speaks on our behalf when words fail us.
c) We are never forsaken (Hebrews 13:5)
God stands with us even in the darkest hours.
d) He gives beauty for ashes (Isaiah 61:3)
Grief may endure, but joy will return in time.
Biblical Example: Hannah wept bitterly, but the Lord answered her cries with joy (1 Samuel 1:10-20).
Let your pain drive you to God's presence where comfort is guaranteed.
4. OUR TEARS MATTER TO GOD
God is not distant from our pain; He sees every tear and feels our sorrow.
a) He keeps our tears in His bottle (Psalm 56:8)
Not one tear is wasted in God's eyes.
b) Jesus wept at Lazarus’ tomb (John 11:35)
The Saviour shares in our sorrow.
c) Weeping endures for a night, joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5)
There is a divine time for comfort and laughter again.
d) The heart of God is tender toward the grieving (Isaiah 66:13)
He comforts like a mother comforts her child.
Biblical Example: Mary Magdalene wept at Jesus’ tomb, and He appeared personally to her (John 20:11-16).
You are not alone in your tears—God is with you, even now.
5. THERE IS HOPE BEYOND THE GRAVE
Christ's resurrection gives us hope that there is life beyond death for all who believe.
a) Christ is the first-fruit of resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20)
His rising guarantees ours.
b) We shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)
Mortality shall be clothed with immortality.
