Introduction

This Psalm was written after Hezekiah prayed and God sent one angel to destroy 185,000 Assyrians. It teaches us that when disaster strikes and all hope seems lost, God can handle things in His own time and way. Many times, we search for God's will in our lives, wondering what to do with our ambitions, goals, and dreams. The answer is to be still and trust that God will reveal His plan at the right time. Similarly, when problems arise and delays occur, we often worry about how to overcome them. The answer is to give it to God, who specializes in miracles. Just like Moses and Israel at the Red Sea, we need to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.

I. Be Still and Know Him as the Refuge (Psalm 46:1-3)

A. God is our personal refuge, unlike nations that find refuge in battalions, battleships, positions, or possessions. God is the Triune God, and the enemy would have to go through all three to reach us.

B. God is a powerful refuge, always present to help us in times of trouble. Even in tight places, He is a very present help, acting speedily.

C. God is a permanent refuge. Even if the whole world is destroyed, He will still be standing because He is our refuge.

II. Be Still and Know Him as the River (Psalm 46:4-7)

During Hezekiah's time, he had planned ahead by diverting the spring of Gihon into a reservoir inside Jerusalem's walls. This ensured a water supply during the siege. In this context, God revealed Himself as a river, with streams that made the city glad.

A. In the Old Testament, God the Father was a fountain of living waters.

B. In the New Testament, God the Son was a well of living water.

C. In the New Testament, God the Holy Spirit is a river of living water. Each revelation is deeper than the previous, and as believers, we have the privilege of experiencing the fullness of God's presence.

III. Be Still and Know Him as the Ruler (Psalm 46:8-11)

A. God's power is evident in how He sent one angel to destroy the Assyrian army.

B. We are called to believe in God's persona, plan, and presence.

1. We need to make time to be still in God's presence and know Him intimately.

2. We can trust that God has a plan for our circumstances and will bring glory to Himself.

3. We can find refuge in the Lord of hosts, who is with us in all situations.

Conclusion

In times of trouble and uncertainty, we are reminded to be still and know that God is in control. He is our refuge, our source of living water, and our ruler. By trusting in Him and seeking His presence, we can find peace and strength to face any challenge that comes our way. May we always remember to be still and know that He is God.
