James in his first chapter warns us not to be deceived, providing reasons to believe in God's goodness regardless of our circumstances.
In the late 90s, there was a popular saying in the church: "God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good." It's easy to proclaim God's goodness when things are going well, but what about when we face difficult circumstances? How can we know that God is truly good? In James 1:16-18, we find reasons to believe in God's goodness, regardless of our circumstances.
Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17). Everything good in this world comes from God. His gifts are always good because they flow out of His love for us. Unlike human gifts, which may have impure motivations, God's gifts are motivated by His goodness and love for us.
God is described as the Father of lights, who does not vary or cast shifting shadows (James 1:17). While everything in this world changes, God remains constant. He is immutable, meaning He never differs from Himself. His holiness, power, and love are perfect and unchanging. We may change at a cellular level, but God's character remains the same.
God chose to bring us forth through the Word of truth, offering us salvation through Jesus Christ (James 1:18). This salvation is a demonstration of God's ultimate goodness towards us. It is not forced but comes from His own will and desire to save sinners. Through faith in Jesus' death and resurrection, we experience a new birth and become partakers of His sure salvation.
God's goodness is evident through His good gifts, unchanging character, and sure salvation. Even in the midst of trials and difficult circumstances, we can trust in His goodness. Let us remember that God's gifts are always good, His character is unchanging, and His salvation is sure. May we continually praise Him for His goodness and trust in His unfailing love.
