Supporting Texts: Matthew 5:14-16, 2 Timothy 3:15, Daniel 1:8, 1 Timothy 4:12
INTRODUCTION
Evangelism in schools and campuses is crucial because young people are at a stage of life where they are shaping their beliefs and making decisions that will impact their future. The Bible encourages us to remember God in the days of our youth (Ecclesiastes 12:1), highlighting the importance of reaching students with the gospel while they are still open to learning and transformation.
In this study, we shall examine the need for evangelism in schools and campuses, the biblical foundation for it, and practical ways to carry it out effectively.
1. THE IMPORTANCE OF EVANGELISM IN SCHOOLS AND CAMPUSES
a) Youth are the future of the Church and society (Psalm 144:12)
The younger generation represents the next leaders, pastors, and missionaries. Reaching them early helps shape godly individuals who will influence the world for Christ.
b) Schools and campuses are mission fields (Matthew 9:37-38)
Students from different backgrounds gather in schools, making them strategic places for spreading the gospel.
c) Many students are searching for identity and purpose (Jeremiah 29:11)
Evangelism helps young people find their true identity in Christ rather than in worldly influences.
d) Peer influence is strong among students (1 Corinthians 15:33)
If godly students rise as evangelists, they can counter negative influences and lead their friends to Christ.
e) Biblical Example: Samuel’s dedication from childhood (1 Samuel 3:1-10)
Samuel was dedicated to God from a young age and grew up to be a great prophet. Early exposure to God’s truth shapes destinies.
2. STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE EVANGELISM IN SCHOOLS AND CAMPUSES
a) Forming Christian fellowships and Bible study groups (Acts 2:42)
Gathering regularly for prayer and Bible study helps students grow in faith and reach others.
b) Using testimonies to share Christ (Mark 5:19)
Personal stories of how Christ has changed lives are powerful tools for evangelism.
c) Living as an example of Christ (Matthew 5:16)
A Christian student’s behaviour can speak louder than words, influencing others positively.
d) Engaging in outreach activities and charity works (James 2:15-17)
Showing Christ’s love through acts of kindness can open doors for evangelism.
e) Biblical Example: The boldness of Daniel and his friends (Daniel 1:8-17)
Daniel and his friends stood for God in a pagan land and influenced their generation.
3. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES IN CAMPUS EVANGELISM
a) Fear of rejection and persecution (Matthew 10:22)
Evangelists in schools may face opposition, but Jesus promised that those who endure will be saved.
b) The influence of secularism and false ideologies (Colossians 2:8)
Many educational institutions promote philosophies contrary to God’s word, making it essential for students to stand firm in their faith.
c) Maintaining a balance between academics and evangelism (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Students must prioritise their studies while also making time to share the gospel.
d) Lack of support from teachers or school authorities (Acts 5:29)
Some schools may restrict religious activities, but wisdom and creative strategies can help spread the gospel without breaking rules.
e) Biblical Example: Paul’s persistence despite opposition (Acts 18:9-11)
Paul faced resistance but continued preaching boldly with God’s encouragement.
4. THE ROLE OF TEACHERS AND PARENTS IN CAMPUS EVANGELISM
a) Teaching children the Word of God early (2 Timothy 3:15)
Parents and teachers should instil biblical values in students before they enter the world.
b) Encouraging and supporting school Christian groups (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Adults should create an environment where students feel encouraged to share their faith.
c) Praying for students to be bold in evangelism (Ephesians 6:18-19)
Spiritual support helps students overcome fear and opposition.
d) Providing resources for evangelism (Proverbs 4:7)
Christian literature, tracts, and digital materials can aid evangelism efforts.
e) Biblical Example: Lois and Eunice’s role in Timothy’s faith (2 Timothy 1:5)
Timothy’s faith was nurtured from childhood by his grandmother and mother.
5. THE ETERNAL IMPACT OF CAMPUS EVANGELISM
a) It saves souls from eternal destruction (John 3:16)
Many students have never heard the gospel, and evangelism gives them a chance for salvation.
b) It raises future Christian leaders (2 Timothy 2:2)
Today’s evangelised student could be tomorrow’s pastor, missionary, or Christian leader.
c) It establishes godly foundations for life (Psalm 119:9-11)
When students encounter Christ early, they build a strong spiritual foundation for adulthood.
d) It leads to revival in schools and campuses (Acts 2:41)
Evangelism can bring spiritual awakening, leading to widespread transformation.
e) Biblical Example: The Samaritan woman’s testimony (John 4:28-30)
Her encounter with Jesus led to the salvation of an entire town.
CONCLUSION
Evangelism in schools and campuses is a divine mandate to raise the next generation for Christ. Every Christian student has a role to play in sharing the gospel with their peers. By living godly lives, forming Christian fellowships, and using creative strategies, we can make a lasting impact on young souls.
