This sermon explores the eternal significance of our everyday choices, urging us to live in the light of eternity and make decisions that honor God.
Welcome, beloved family in Christ. We are gathered here today, not by accident, but by divine appointment. Our Heavenly Father, in His infinite wisdom and boundless love, has drawn us together to share in the richness of His Word, to grow in the knowledge of His truth, and to be transformed by the power of His Spirit.
Today, we find ourselves standing on the precipice of a profound revelation, as we turn our hearts and minds towards the book of Matthew. Specifically, we shall focus on the 25th chapter, verse 46, where Christ Himself tells us, "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
In this single verse, we are confronted with a stark reality - the choices we make in this temporal world have eternal consequences. But let's not be daunted by this, rather let's see it as a divine invitation to live a life of purpose, a life that reverberates with the echoes of eternity.
This reminds me of a profound quote by the esteemed theologian J.I. Packer who once said, "The life of true holiness is rooted in the soil of awed adoration." It is in this awed adoration, this holy reverence for our Eternal King that we find the strength to make choices that honor Him, choices that echo into eternity.
Let us also remember, my dear brothers and sisters, that eternity isn't a distant, far-off concept. It's here, it's now, it's intertwined with our every breath. Every moment we live is a moment lived in the light of eternity.
So, let us proceed with a heart of humility and a spirit of expectancy, as we seek to understand the eternal echoes of our everyday choices, embrace eternity in the present, and comprehend the effects of our choices on eternity.
Let's bow our heads in prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of gathering together in Your name. As we open Your Word today, we ask that You open our hearts and minds to receive Your truth. Guide us, Lord, as we seek to understand the eternal significance of our everyday choices. Help us to live in the light of eternity, making choices that honor You and reflect Your love to the world. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
When we consider our daily decisions, we may not always recognize the lasting impact they can have. Yet, each choice we make, each action we take, reverberates through time and into eternity. It's like throwing a stone into a pond. The initial splash is our action in the present, but the ripples that spread outwards are the effects of our choices, reaching far beyond what we can see.
Think about it - when we choose to love, to forgive, to show kindness, we're not just affecting the here and now. We're sending ripples of God's love and grace into the world, touching lives in ways we may never fully comprehend. These are the echoes of our everyday choices, resonating into eternity.
Unfortunately, it's not just our positive choices that echo into eternity. Our mistakes, our failures, our sins - they too have an eternal impact. Yet, even in this, we find God's grace. For when we confess our sins, when we repent and turn back to God, He forgives us. He wipes the slate clean. And in doing so, He transforms our mistakes into a testament of His mercy and love, a testament that echoes into eternity.
Now, let's consider the words of Christ in Matthew 25:46.
Jesus speaks of two distinct outcomes - eternal punishment and eternal life. These outcomes are directly linked to the choices we make in this life. Those who choose to reject God, to live a life of sin, they face eternal punishment. But those who choose to accept Christ, to live a life of righteousness, they are promised eternal life.
It can be frightening to think that our choices have eternal consequences. But it's also a hopeful reality. For it means that our lives have purpose, that our actions have meaning. We're not just aimlessly drifting through life. We're making choices that matter, choices that echo into eternity.
Consider this - when we choose to follow Christ influencing those around us. Our actions can lead others towards Christ, can inspire them to also choose a life of righteousness. And in doing so, we're not just affecting their lives. We're affecting their eternity. But what does it mean to live a life of righteousness?
Living a life of righteousness is includes outward and inward obedience. It's about living a life of love, grace, and mercy. We are to be reflecting the character of Christ in our everyday actions. These choices, these actions, they echo into eternity.
Transition. So, as we go about our daily lives, let's be mindful of the choices we make. Let's remember that our actions have an eternal impact. Let's strive to live a life of righteousness, a life that echoes God's love and grace into eternity. And let's encourage others to do the same. For in doing so, we're not just making a difference in this world. We're making a difference for eternity.
