God, through Christ Jesus, has liberated us from our chains, yet often we fail to recognize this and instead burden ourselves with worldly concerns. This sermon aims to remind believers of the freedom granted to us by the Son of God, and to discourage the self-imposition of unnecessary burdens.
Freedom or Liberty has been considered as a basic human right throughout history. In today's world, the issue of freedom is highly discussed, especially in our country. However, we often fail to realize that God in Christ Jesus has already set us free from bondage. This sermon aims to encourage believers to understand and embrace the freedom we have in Christ.
God is a God of freedom and liberty. From the very beginning, He gave Adam and Eve the freedom to make their own choices and work according to their free will. This freedom is a gift from God that allows us to enjoy His goodness in this world. In 2 Corinthians 3:17, it is stated that "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
The theme of freedom is also evident in the redemption of the people of Israel from the bondage of Egypt. God heard their cry and remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, leading to their liberation from slavery. Jesus, at the start of His ministry, read from the book of Isaiah in Luke 4, emphasizing that one of His purposes was to set the captives free.
However, it is important to note that freedom does not mean we can do whatever we want without consequences. In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul reminds us that although we have the right to do anything, not everything is beneficial or should be mastered by us.
The letter to the Galatians, written by Paul, provides a clear understanding of what it means to be free in Christ and outlines our rights as Christians. Jesus came to liberate us from the bondage of sin and Satan. He invites all who are burdened to find rest in Him (Matthew 11:28).
Freedom in Christ can be experienced in various areas of our lives. Here, we will focus on three key areas:
1. Freedom from worldly traditions: Often, we find ourselves entangled in the ways of the world, trying to please others instead of following God's Word. In Galatians 2:15, Paul reminds us that we are justified by faith in Jesus Christ, not by observing the law. The religious authorities of Jesus' time had turned God's law into man-made traditions. Similarly, the Galatians were slipping back into the bondage of Jewish traditions, neglecting the true freedom found in Christ. Jesus Himself challenged the traditions of His time, demonstrating that man-made traditions can lead to bondage. The Spirit gives life, while traditions of man bring bondage (2 Corinthians 3:6).
2. Freedom from the bondage of sin: Jesus came to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He paid the price for our freedom from the burden, guilt, and bondage of sin. In Galatians 5:1, Paul urges believers to stand firm in the liberty Christ has given us and not be entangled again in the yoke of bondage. Sin enslaves us, but through faith in Jesus, we can be set free. Romans 3:23 reminds us that all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. However, Romans 6:23 offers hope by stating that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Christ's sacrifice on the cross has removed the bondage of sin for those who believe in Him.
3. Freedom from fear: Fear is prevalent in our world today. However, as believers, we do not need to be afraid because God has already taken care of our fears. Romans 8:15 assures us that we have received the Spirit of adoption as sons and daughters, not a spirit of slavery that leads to fear. Fear doubts the power of Jesus, who has been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Proverbs 1:33 promises security and ease for those who listen to God and trust in His promises. In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul reminds us that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and self-control, not a spirit of fear.
In conclusion, if we have been set free by God, then we are truly free. Satan, the master of lies, will try to deceive us into believing that we are still in bondage. However, the truth is that Christ has already set us free from all forms of bondage. Let us rest in the freedom of Christ and not be yoked again under any kind of slavery or bondage.
