Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Jesus prayed and relied on the Holy Spirit for every change. Even at the times of Christ’s greatest popularity He knew that only the Spirit produces lasting change.
Can change truly happen? Many of us make New Year's resolutions, hoping to bring about personal transformation. However, change is often met with resistance, as people prefer the familiar. Even when individuals claim to have experienced a spiritual rebirth, skepticism arises. But the Bible tells us that change is not only possible but necessary. Jesus himself emphasized the need for internal transformation before external changes can occur.
To grasp the meaning of the parable, we must first understand the process of fermenting wine in goatskins. The skins were tanned and sewn shut, and unfermented grape juice was poured in. Only new wineskins had the flexibility to stretch during fermentation without breaking. Putting new wine into old wineskins would cause them to burst, resulting in the loss of both wine and skin. Jesus used this analogy to illustrate that change must begin internally before external changes can take place.
Why do we resist change? Often, it is because we find comfort in the familiar. We believe that the old is better and are hesitant to embrace something new. However, Jesus brought something entirely new and fresh – the Gospel of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Just as old and new wine cannot be mixed, the rigid traditions of the Pharisees prevented them from accepting Jesus' teachings. As Christians, we must remain open to new ideas and approaches, allowing our hearts to remain pliable.
To bring about change, we can learn from Jesus' methods:
1. Prayer and reliance on the Holy Spirit: Jesus prayed and sought guidance from the Holy Spirit for every change.
2. Declaring His purposes: Jesus openly stated His intentions, processes, and motives to those who would listen.
3. Challenging authorities: Jesus fearlessly confronted religious leaders who hindered the growth of His kingdom.
4. Building relationships: Jesus developed personal connections with people, challenging them to change out of love for Him and the Father's will.
5. Balancing the letter and spirit of the law: Jesus emphasized the importance of understanding the true intent behind religious laws.
6. Providing hope and encouragement: Jesus offered rest and comfort to those burdened by life's challenges.
7. Avoiding hypocrisy: Jesus taught against judging others while neglecting one's own faults.
8. Using positive authority: Jesus taught with authority, inspiring others to follow His teachings.
9. Focusing on God's priorities: Jesus understood that His mission was not to change everything in society but to fulfill God's will.
10. Emphasizing obedience: Jesus stressed the importance of obeying His commands to bring about lasting change.
11. Involving others: Jesus enlisted committed individuals to participate in His ministry and effect change.
12. Timing: Jesus understood the significance of timing in implementing changes.
13. Patience: Jesus recognized that some changes would take time to produce significant results.
14. Declaring Himself as the key to change: Jesus proclaimed that He was the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one could come to the Father except through Him.
15. Sharing wisdom and knowledge: Jesus possessed all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge necessary for change.
16. Commissioning His disciples: Jesus entrusted His followers with the task of making disciples and teaching them to obey His commands.
17. Building His church: Jesus established His church as a key agent for producing change.
If we desire to meet the needs of the lost and make a difference in our world, we must be open to newness. We should not limit what God can do or how He may want to work through us. Let us pray, rely on the Holy Spirit, and follow Jesus' example in bringing about lasting change in ourselves and in the world around us.
May God grant us the courage and wisdom to embrace change and be agents of transformation in His name.
