4. Consider our text
DISCUSSION:I. Explain the text.
A. Note two problems
1. He wasn’t willing to admit that he loved Jesus.
2. He wasn’t willing to accept the Lord’s charge feed my sheep.
II. Do you really love Jesus?
A. Talk is Cheap
B. We know Jesus really loved us.
Romans 5:5-8 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
C. We to should have a working love.
John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
2 John 1:6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.
III. We see an example of love in the life of Paul.
A. Consider what he endured (2 Cor. 11:22f).
B. Why did he endure so much?
2 Corinthians 5:13-14 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ constrains us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died;
IV. Do you love Jesus?
A. Study the Word.
2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
1. Do you love him enough to find the truth?
B. Live a righteous life
Romans 13:9 For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
C. Do yo love him enough to treat his brothers and sisters with love and patience?
1. Peter told if you love feed my sheep.
D. They have the spirit of God, they are part of the temple.
E. Do you love him enough to pray as you aught.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing,
F. To give as you aught even at the holiday season.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, have an abundance for every good work.
G. Discuss holiday season
H. Enough to attend
1. Heb 10:25;
Acts 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
I. To obey him by becoming a Christian?
1. My family won’t agree.
2. I want a church with a nicer building.
3. I was hoping for a racquetball membership.
4. I was looking for a church that would not expect much of me?
Hebrews 10:19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Hebrews 10:30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord." And again, "The LORD will judge His people."
CONCLUSION:
1. Would you have raised your hand at the beginning of the service.
