Digging God’s Wells

Text: Genesis 26:17-23

“And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham; and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. And Isaac’s servant digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. And the herdsman of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdsman, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. And they digged another well, and strove for that also; and he called the name of it Sitnah. And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they

strove not; and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. And he went up from

thence to Beer-sheba.”

Abraham The Well Digger

Beer-lahi-roi, Beer-sheba, and Rehoboth were three wells that Abraham dug.

Abraham and the Philistines were at odds against one another for many years, there was always a conflict between the servants of Abraham and the herdsman of the Philistines. Abraham would dig a well and the Philistines would try to claim it for their own, and so

Abraham would go to another location and there dig another and the same thing would again happen, therefore Abraham became a well digger.

Abraham had now died, and his promised son Isaac was the ruler of all that his father had left him. Isaac himself decided to go and re-dig the wells that his father Abraham had dug, but had been filled up by the Philistines. It was strife in Isaac’s life that caused him to decide to go and re-dig the wells that his father had dug before. The strife was over the well at Esek, and Sitnah,

In a great sense we are a lot like this in our day. When I read the biographies of past men of God such as; Moody, Spurgeon, Torry, Rice, Sunday, Finney, Edwards, Westley, Luther, Roloff, Savanorola, Hodson, Broughton, Smith, Mcgee, Taylor, Muller, and so many others who were used mightily by God, I am challenged to go and to re-dig the wells that these men dug.

Beer-lahi-roi

The name Beerlahiroi means, “The God who lives and sees what we do!”

What we need today is to exalt preaching against sin! Many men stand in the sacred pulpit today who never speak out against sin. God hates sin, it was because of sin that our Lord Jesus gave His life upon the cross of Calvary. It is sin that has ruined the homes and families of countless thousands of people in our world, it is sin that has caused the judgments of God to come upon this world. Sin separates us from Almighty God.

There are too many Christians who are living backslide lives today because they are living in sin. Sin is what is sending countless multitudes to hell each and every day that we live. I am told that every second that passes at lest fifty five souls go out into eternity, some to eternal hell, and some to heaven.

What this old world needs today, are men who are not afraid to call sin by it’s rightful name, SIN! If we had a great number of ministers who would stand in the pulpit each Sunday Morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night, and call sin what it really is, we

could have a generation of believers who would evangelize this old world.

General William Booth once said; “If I could send our workers to hell for just twenty four hours and then let them out, they would win the world to Christ in a manner of months, or years. Today it seems that we are getting further and further behind in winning this world to Christ. Paganism, Idolatry, False cults, and the like are growing are a two to one pace against the Church. Oh, child of God let’s get up and win this world before it is to late.

One day the harvest will be over, the work of winning souls will be over, and then how will we stand before God? He that winneth souls is wise!

Beer-sheba

Beersheba means, “A promise of God.”

The Bible has the answer to any question concerning life. We should love it, read it, and keep it each and every day. Modernism has almost filled in the well of Bible preaching today. To often people get a sermonett, instead of a sermon. To often we hear a beautiful literature story, and not the old rugged cross story in our modern preaching. We must get back to re-digging God’s wells if we are to know the promises of God in our lives, dear friends.
