Thoughts:
We need to be like God the Father who is ever-present, always listening, and full of self-giving love and not angry at the world. Since we are created in His image, we have the ability, through the gentle presence of the Holy Spirit, to become like Him and even parent like him.
We have an attack on Biblical and True masculinity in our world but Biblical masculinity is rooted in self-giving love, and is not toxic! True masculinity instead of being toxic is healthy and transformative. We need Christian fathers who will be present as God is present, listen as God listens, and offer themselves in self-giving love to their family.
But maybe you were raised without a dad – absentee dad – so your idea of a father is not what it should be due to his never being there or maybe the abuse of your own father has scarred your heart. I first want to say that God the Father can and will be your dad – listen to what David says about God the Father:
Scriptures:
Psalm 68 – Song of David
1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
may his foes flee before him.
2 As smoke is blown away by the wind,
may you blow them away;
as wax melts before the fire,
may the wicked perish before God.
3 But may the righteous be glad
and rejoice before God;
may they be happy and joyful.
4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol him who rides on the cloudsa—
his name is the LORD—
and rejoice before him.
5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.
6 God sets the lonely in families,b
he leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
Genesis 1:27: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Colossians 3:5-14: 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Ephesians 6:4: 4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Philippians 4:6: 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
