God is present, actively speaking through creation and His Word, inviting us to trust His order, care, and personal involvement in our lives.
Friends, have you ever stood under a sky so clear you could almost hear it sing? Have you watched a sunrise stretch its rosy fingers across the horizon and felt your heart settle? The world is wide and your week may have been weary, but right here, right now, the God who made every freckle of starlight and every grain of sand is near. He’s the Composer behind the birdsong that greets your morning. He’s the Artist behind the color wheel splashed on autumn leaves. He’s the Father who holds you steady when the ground feels shaky and the future feels foggy.
Creation hums with a holy hush, and yet it also shouts with joy. With every turning planet and every beating heart, there is a message: you are not an accident, you are not abandoned, you are seen. When God speaks, things happen. “And God said…” is no small sentence. It is the spark that lit the cosmos, the word that wakes the world, the voice that still calms storms and stills souls. The structure of your days, the rhythm of seasons, the beauty overhead and the breath in your chest—all of it points to intention and kindness. If your life feels scattered, take heart: the God who separated light from darkness can order your hours. If your soul feels empty, be encouraged: the God who filled the skies and seas knows how to fill you with good things.
Francis Schaeffer said it simply and powerfully, “He is there and He is not silent.” The heavens are not quiet decoration; they are declaration. The sun runs its course like a champion, the moon keeps watch like a faithful sentinel, and the stars sparkle like a choir of candles on the mantle of night. What are they telling you? That the Maker is mighty, that His words are wise, and that His hands are gentle. He speaks, and light leaps. He designs, and life flourishes. He sustains, and hope rises.
So bring your baffling questions and your quiet aches. Bring the decision that keeps you up at night and the prayer you’ve prayed a thousand times. The God who began the beginning is present in this moment. He is faithful in the grand sweep of galaxies and faithful in the close corners of your Tuesday afternoon. Let your heart listen for His voice. Let your eyes look up. Let your trust lean in. Because this is a world held together by a God who knows what He’s doing, and He knows your name.
Opening Prayer: Father, Maker of heaven and earth, we pause and breathe in Your nearness. Open our ears to hear Your voice that spoke light into being. Open our eyes to see Your glory in the world You have fashioned. Steady our hearts with the assurance that Your order is good and Your care is constant. Forgive our sins, quiet our fears, and awaken fresh wonder as we read Your Word. Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“ He is there and He is not silent.” — Francis Schaeffer
Scripture Reading:
Genesis 1 (KJV) 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. 20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. 24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
Psalm 19 (KJV) 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. 6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
When Scripture opens, the first thing we learn about God is that He speaks. He does not push or strain. He speaks. Sound becomes shape. Breath becomes boundary. A word goes out, and reality takes its place. This is not about noise or volume. This is authority. This is purpose. This is how everything starts.
“And God said” is the drumbeat of Genesis 1. The phrase returns again and again. Creation is not random. Creation answers. The sea answers. The sky answers. The soil answers. Each line of speech draws a line in space and time. Each command gives a task and a limit. Each name sets a thing in its lane. It is steady. It is sure. It is good.
This matters for more than the first week of the world. It tells you how God works with you now. He speaks into places that feel vague and blank. He speaks into long nights and long waits. He speaks into rooms that echo. His voice is able to make a place for you to stand. His voice is able to make a morning where there has only been dark.
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” God does not bargain with darkness. Light arrives at the sound of His will. He sees the light. He calls it good. He separates light from darkness. Then He names Day and He names Night. This is God making a clear line and giving that line a name. There is nothing foggy about it. Where His word lands, things sort out.
Naming shows care. Naming shows rule. To name is to define what a thing is for. In the chapter, God names Day, Night, Heaven, Earth, and Seas. He does not leave the world to guess its task. He hands each piece a role. This is why His world holds together. This is why you can trust the ground and the sky and the shore. His word tells each part where to go and how to serve the rest.
When His word addresses the earth, life springs up. Grass, seed, fruit. Life that can keep making life. The seed is in itself, Scripture says. The command carries a future inside it. Growth can continue because He has spoken once, and that word keeps working. That is how His word serves you too. It plants new habits with the power to go on. It plants hope that can bear more hope. It plants faith that can raise more faith.
He speaks again, and the lights appear in the heavens. They mark days, seasons, and years. God is not only making beauty. He is giving you a calendar. His word gives you a way to count time and a way to live in time. Morning and evening. Work and rest. Feast and fast. His word guards you from drift. It sets a pace that can bless your body and your mind. When you receive His word, your hours begin to fit together.
He speaks to the sea and to the sky, and they bring forth life in number. He blesses the creatures and gives them a future. Be fruitful. Multiply. Fill. Blessing is not a vague wish. It is God’s effective word for increase. When He blesses, the result is life that spreads. His word does this without strain. You do not have to be large for it to work. Small beginnings answer Him as well as great waves and great birds.
He speaks to the land, and more life appears. Cattle, creeping things, beasts of the earth. Each kind has its pattern. Each kind fits a place. There is a peace here that comes from right design. This is the peace your soul longs for. This is the peace His word can bring to your inner world. Not a hush that erases who you are. A hush that lets you be who you were made to be.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image.” Now the word turns to us. God makes people by a word and for a word. Image means likeness and calling. You are made to hear Him and to answer Him. You are made to reflect Him in how you lead, serve, create, and care. Dominion is not a threat. It is an assignment for good care. It is stewardship that serves all that He has made.
“So God created man in his own image… male and female.” Identity is gift. Identity is spoken by God before you can lift a hand. He blesses them and gives them work. Be fruitful. Multiply. Fill the earth. Subdue it. Rule the creatures. This is dignity from the start. God’s voice does not leave you nameless. God’s voice gives you a place in His world. You do not have to invent your worth. It has been spoken over you.
He also gives food. Herbs with seed. Trees with fruit. He provides before need even speaks. His word assigns resources to care for life. This is part of His goodness in the chapter. His plan is not bare. His plan feeds. When He calls you to a task, He also speaks the supply. You can move forward on that promise even when your hands feel light. His word does not send you out empty.
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” This is the first review of history. The Maker looks and delights. His word has not only arranged things. His word has produced joy. Goodness is not a thin word. Goodness is thick and full. It can be tasted and seen. It can be worked and kept. His approval is part of the gift. When He speaks over you in Christ, that approval rests on you as well.
Psalm 19 says the heavens declare the glory of God. Day speaks to day. Night gives knowledge to night. No tongue, and yet every place can hear. Creation runs like a broadcast. The reach is wide. The message is clear. Glory is not hidden in a corner. It shines across the sky and across the years. If you have eyes, you have a sermon above you.
The same psalm turns from sky to Scripture. “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” Creation tells you that God is great. His word written tells you how to live and how to be made new. Testimony makes wise the simple. Statutes rejoice the heart. Commandment gives light to the eyes. This is the ongoing work of His speech. It is not stale. It is not harsh. It restores you.
God’s judgments are true and right. They are more to be desired than gold. They are sweeter than honey. They warn. They reward. They cleanse what you cannot see on your own. They hold you back from pride. They keep you free. When you take them in, you learn to think and feel in sync with the One who formed you. His voice does not crush. His voice lifts and steadies.
The psalm ends with a prayer for words and thoughts. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight.” This is fitting. If God’s world formed at His word, and if His world still speaks, then our words should answer. Our mouths and minds can echo the truth that fills the sky and the page. We can return His speech with trust and with praise.
This is how new things start in your life. Not with noise. With a word that carries His heart and His aim. You open the text. You hear Him. You agree with Him. You step into what He has said. Light shows up. Boundaries make sense. Work finds shape. Rest becomes sweet. And a small world begins to grow where there was only blank space.
You do not have to force it. You can ask for it. “Open my eyes.” “Teach me.” “Speak, Lord.” These are simple prayers. They fit any hour. They fit any season. The God who spoke then still speaks now through what He has made and what He has written. And when He speaks, life takes shape.
