INTRODUCTION

From the very beginning, God distinguished humanity from every other aspect of creation by declaring that man was made in His image and likeness. While the sun, moon, animals, and plants were spoken into existence, man was formed with divine intention and identity. This truth establishes the value, dignity, and purpose of human life.

In a world that constantly redefines identity based on status, wealth, culture, or achievement, Genesis 1:26 brings us back to God’s original design. Knowing that we are created in God’s image corrects inferiority, heals rejection, and restores confidence in divine purpose.

This message reveals that being made in God’s image is not merely about appearance but about representation. God created man to reveal His character, exercise His authority, and fulfil His agenda on the earth.

1. GOD CREATED MAN WITH DIVINE IDENTITY

Being made in God’s image means humanity carries a God-given identity that precedes social labels and personal experiences.

This identity is a spiritual reality that defines who we are before we define what we do.

a) Man was intentionally created (Genesis 1:26)

God deliberated before creating man, showing that humanity was not an afterthought but a divine plan.

b) God’s image gives human value (Psalm 8:4-5)

Man’s worth comes from God’s imprint, not from achievements or possessions.

c) Identity comes before assignment (Jeremiah 1:5)

God establishes who you are before revealing what you are called to do.

d) Sin did not erase God’s image (Genesis 9:6)

Though damaged by sin, God’s image in man was not destroyed, proving humanity’s enduring value.

Biblical Example:

David, despite being overlooked by his family, was chosen by God because God saw beyond appearance and recognised divine identity (1 Samuel 16:6-13).

2. GOD’S IMAGE EMPOWERS MAN FOR DOMINION

God’s image is connected to authority. Dominion flows from identity, not effort.

God never intended man to live as a victim of circumstances but as a steward with authority.

a) Dominion was part of creation (Genesis 1:26)

Authority was given at creation, not after the fall or redemption.

b) Dominion is exercised through obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1)

Authority functions effectively when aligned with God’s will.

c) Dominion requires responsibility (Genesis 2:15)

Authority is sustained by stewardship, not exploitation.

d) Loss of dominion came through disobedience (Romans 5:12)

Sin opened the door for limitations, but not cancellation of purpose.

Biblical Example:

Adam named the animals, demonstrating authority and dominion delegated by God (Genesis 2:19-20).

3. GOD’S IMAGE IS RESTORED THROUGH CHRIST

While sin distorted God’s image, Christ restores it fully in those who believe.

Salvation is not only about forgiveness but about restoration of divine likeness.

a) Christ is the perfect image of God (Colossians 1:15)

Jesus reveals what humanity was meant to reflect.

b) Salvation renews the image (Colossians 3:10)

Believers are renewed daily into God’s likeness through Christ.

c) Transformation is progressive (2 Corinthians 3:18)

God’s image is restored as believers grow in grace and truth.

d) Righteousness reflects God’s nature (Ephesians 4:24)

Holiness is evidence of restored likeness.

Biblical Example:

Zacchaeus encountered Christ and experienced a transformed life that reflected God’s righteousness and compassion (Luke 19:1-9).

4. GOD’S IMAGE CALLS MAN TO REPRESENT HIM ON EARTH

Being made in God’s image carries responsibility to reflect God’s character and values.

Believers are God’s representatives in the world.

a) Man represents God’s character (Matthew 5:16)

God’s image is revealed through righteous living and good works.

b) Words should reflect God’s nature (James 3:9-10)

Blessing and cursing should not proceed from the same image-bearer.

c) Love reflects divine likeness (1 John 4:7-8)

Love is evidence of God’s nature at work in man.

d) The world recognises God through believers (2 Corinthians 5:20)

We are ambassadors representing God’s kingdom.

Biblical Example:

Joseph reflected God’s wisdom, integrity, and mercy in Egypt, causing Pharaoh to recognise God’s presence in him (Genesis 41:38-39).

CONCLUSION

Being created in God’s image is the foundation of human dignity, purpose, and authority. When this truth is understood, believers no longer live as victims but as divinely authorised representatives of heaven on earth.

This message is a call to live consciously in alignment with God’s design. As you embrace your identity in Christ, you will reflect God’s character, exercise godly authority, and fulfil divine purpose.
