CHRISTMAS: WHEN GOD CAME DOWN TO SAVE MAN

INTRODUCTION:

Christmas is not merely a festive season marked by celebrations and traditions; it is a profound spiritual revelation. It is the announcement that God did not abandon humanity in sin and darkness but chose to come down personally to rescue man. When heaven touched earth, salvation was born.

From the Garden of Eden, humanity fell into sin and separation from God. No human effort could bridge the gap. Laws failed, sacrifices were insufficient, and prophets could only point the way. Then, in the fullness of time, God came down, not as an angel or a vision, but as a man. Christmas marks the turning point in human history where divinity clothed itself with humanity to redeem mankind.

Christmas reveals God’s heart, His love, and His determination to save man at all costs. It is the story of grace in action and love made visible.

1. CHRISTMAS REVEALS GOD’S INITIATIVE TO SAVE MAN

Salvation began with God, not with man.

a) God took the first step toward humanity (Romans 5:8). While man was still in sin, God acted.

b) God came down because man could not rise up (Psalm 49:7-8). Redemption was beyond human ability.

c) God’s love compelled His coming (John 3:16). Love was the driving force behind incarnation.

d) God’s plan of salvation was eternal (Ephesians 1:4). Christmas was not an afterthought.

Biblical Example: God sought Adam in the garden after the fall, revealing His desire to restore man (Genesis 3:8-9).

2. CHRISTMAS REVEALS GOD CLOTHED IN HUMANITY

The incarnation is the mystery and power of Christmas.

a) The Word became flesh (John 1:14). God took on a human body.

b) Christ experienced human limitations (Hebrews 4:15). He felt hunger, pain, and sorrow, yet without sin.

c) Christ identified fully with humanity (Hebrews 2:14). He shared in flesh and blood to redeem man.

d) Christ remained fully God while fully man (Colossians 2:9). Divinity dwelt bodily in Him.

Biblical Example: Jesus was born in a manger, embracing humility to reach humanity (Luke 2:6-7).

3. CHRISTMAS REVEALS THE PURPOSE OF CHRIST’S COMING

Christ did not come merely to be born; He came to save.

a) Christ came to save man from sin (Matthew 1:21). Salvation was His primary assignment.

b) Christ came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). His coming brought victory over darkness.

c) Christ came to restore man to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Reconciliation was achieved through Him.

d) Christ came to give eternal life (John 10:10). His mission extended beyond this world.

Biblical Example: Zacchaeus encountered Jesus and received salvation in his house (Luke 19:9-10).

4. CHRISTMAS REVEALS GOD’S HUMILITY AND SACRIFICE

God’s descent to save man demonstrates unmatched humility.

a) Christ humbled Himself willingly (Philippians 2:6-8). He laid aside divine privileges.

b) Christ embraced suffering for salvation (Isaiah 53:3-5). His pain purchased our peace.

c) Christ chose the path of obedience (Hebrews 5:8). Salvation flowed through obedience.

d) Christ’s sacrifice reveals the depth of God’s love (Romans 8:32). God spared nothing for redemption.

Biblical Example: The cross was the ultimate expression of God’s love revealed at Christmas (John 19:30).

5. CHRISTMAS REVEALS MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY TO RESPOND

God came down, but man must respond to His coming.

a) Christ must be received personally (John 1:12). Salvation is activated by faith.

b) Christ calls for repentance and belief (Mark 1:15). Response determines benefit.

c) Christ transforms those who accept Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). New life begins in Him.

d) Christ commissions believers to share the message (Matthew 28:19-20). The saved become messengers.

Biblical Example: The shepherds responded immediately and glorified God after seeing Christ (Luke 2:15-20).

CONCLUSION:

Christmas is the celebration of the greatest intervention in human history: when God came down to save man. It is the proof that heaven refused to give up on earth and that love conquered distance, sin, and separation.

As you celebrate this season, remember that Christmas is not just about a date, gifts, or tradition. It is about a Saviour who came down so that man could rise again. Receive Him, rejoice in Him, and reveal Him to your world.
