China Earthquake
Contributed by Jonathan Campbell on May 19, 2008 (message contributor)
Summary: A sermon preached in the aftermath of the major earthquake which struck China on 12 May 2008.
1. THE REMARKABLE STRENGTH
The combined annual force of earthquakes is equal to 100,000 times the power of the atomic bombs that flattened Hiroshima.
Psalm 62:11 "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God". Matthew 6:13 "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen".
2. THE RADICAL SHAKING
To experience the tremors of a quake is terrifying. Those who are lost in sin should shake.
Conviction of sin. My experience. Jonathan Edwards’ parishioners shook when he preached ’Sinners in the hands of an angry God’.
Jeremiah 5:22 "Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?"
3. THE RICHTER SCALE
Invented by Charles Richter in 1935. China’s quake measured 7.9
God has His scale. One side is weighed down with your sin. Nothing is in the other side. Daniel 5:27 "Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting".
Jesus alone can weigh down the empty side. Our best efforts are useless.
4. THE RESCUE STORY
A few have been pulled from the rubble. But only a few. Matthew 7:14 "strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it".
Jesus can rescue you from the rubble of sin.
