Change Your Clothes

I. Clothing – What does it represent?

1. Sign of wealth, prestige and social position

 Priestly Garment – Exodus 39

 Joseph’s Coat – Genesis 37:3

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because

he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of

many colours.

4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

 Samson’s 30 Garments – Judges 14:11-13

12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle

unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven

days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty

sheets and thirty change of garments:

13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.

 Haman Answer – Esther 6: 6 – 9

6 So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall

be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour?

Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king

delight to do honour more than to myself?

7 And Haman answered the king, For the man whom the king

delighteth to honour,

8 Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to

wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown

royal which is set upon his head:

9 And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and bring him on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour.

 Jesus Being Mocked – Matthew 27:28 -31

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the

common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of

soldiers.

28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it

upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him

on the head.

31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off

from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

 Guards at the Cross – John 19: 23 – 24

29 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his

garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

30 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it,

but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

 Achan and the Babalonian Garment - Joshua 7: 21

21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his

countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

 Giving Preference – James 2: 1 - 3

2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ,

the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing,

and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
