Can You Hear the Melody?

John 14:1-14

This week, the cabin fever was really kicking in so I decided to take a scenic drive through town.

- I came to the red light over in front of Hardees and began to hear this loud BOOM BOOM BOOM..

- I thought, Oh Lord there is something wrong with the car.

- Then I thought, maybe it is an earthquake (living in Tazewell all my life I have no idea what one sounds like)

- I looked over and laughed at myself when I realized that the sound was coming from the car next to me.

- The guy in the car was playing air drums on his steering wheel

o Apparently, he was able to drum to a melody that I just couldn’t hear because of the BOOM BOOM BOOM of his base.

Today in our scripture, we enter into a room of Christ followers who cannot hear the melody of life because of the booming noise of Fear and Anxiety.

- These followers had given up so much in order to follow Christ

- They had watched him as he performed miracles and signs

- They followed him, listening to Christ as he taught them a new melody…

o A song of joy

o A song of love

o A song of peace

- They had been singing this new song and humming it as they journeyed

- But now…

- Now they are filled with Anxiety and dread.

- Jesus was telling them that he was going to only be with them a little longer.

- Then tells them that where he is going, they cannot go.

- All the disciples could hear was the BOOMING noise of fear

So, Jesus breaks through the noise of the world and tells them to not be troubled. To believe in him and to believe in God.

- I can just imagine the sigh of relief as their weights of worry and fear subsided.

- Now, was Jesus telling his disciples that nothing bad would happen to them?

- Did Jesus tell them that everything was going to be ok and that they would live a life of sunshine and rainbows?

- There answer is no…

- Jesus is reminding the disciples that even through the booming noise of the world, that the melody could still be heard.

- Jesus is reminding them that even when life may get tough and the future unsure, that they can trust God for he has been faithful and would remind faithful.

My friends, we live in a world that is filled with the boom of sounds that can keep us from hearing the melody of life. So often we hear:

- The sounds of fear

- The sounds of Anxiety

- The Sounds of depression

- The sounds of addiction

Jesus says to us this morning as he did to the disciples

- “Don’t be troubled. Trust is God. Trust also in Me.

God has proven his faithfulness time and time again and assures you that you are not alone.

- In the face of adversity

- In the face of fear

- In the face of anxiety

- In the face of illness

- In the face of depression

- In the face of addiction

o GOD is there. You can put you trust in him.

o Weeping may endure for the night, But JOY comes in the morning.

The noises of life can make us think that the melody is gone, but if you listen within your heart, the melody is still there!

- Jesus whispers sweet and low, fear not, I am with thee, Peace by Still. In all of life’s ebb and flow.

o Listen… Can you hear it?

- Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Sweetest name I know

- Fills my every longing, keeps me singing as I go.

Friends, in this life that is full of noise, listen for the melody… Listen for the song of Joy… Peace… and Love… Because it’s there!

In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
