Summary: The pre-determined purpose of God who works all things according to the counsel of His will.

Bittersweet Sovereignty

I. What Is God’s Sovereignty?

Eph 1:11 - The pre-determined purpose of God who works all things (Rom 8:28) according to the counsel of His will.

Prov 16:9 Our planning, Prov 19:21 His directing, Prov 20:24 His directing, Gen 50:20 & John 21:22 (Our understanding) These two often don’t reconcile

II. Does Prayer and Sovereignty Ever Conflict? Yes

Matt 26:36-46

Jesus experienced incomprehensible sorrow and reluctance when forced with the bitter cup of God’s will.

Nevertheless, His perfect trust and submission led to our glorious salvation

2 Corin 12:7

"God is good enough to lead us in spite of powerful objections"

III. What Is Good about Sovereignty?

Our God and Savior Jesus Christ, who alone is sovereign!

The Sovereign God!

We have a Good Shepherd

John 10:11-16 - I AM the good Shepherd

I OWN the sheep

I WOULD DIE FOR MY FLOCK

“Unlike western shepherds who drive the sheep from the side or behind, often using sheep dogs, Near Eastern shepherds lead their flocks, their voice calling them to move on.”

The Good Shepherd carries the wounded on His shoulders.
