Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
This sermon explores how joy, a gift from the Holy Spirit, strengthens believers and remains constant even amidst life's most challenging seasons.
Good morning, beloved family of God. Isn't it a blessing to gather here in His house, to lift our voices in praise, to find comfort in the fellowship of believers, and to be nourished by the Word of God? Indeed, it is a privilege we should never take for granted.
In the spirit of gratitude, let us turn our hearts and minds to the Scripture that will guide our reflection today. It comes from the first chapter of 1 John, verses 1 through 4:
"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete."
In these verses, the Apostle John reminds us of the tangible reality of Jesus Christ, the Word of life, and the joy that comes from fellowship with Him and with one another.
In the midst of life's storms, it can be challenging to hold onto joy. We often find ourselves tossed about by the waves of uncertainty, doubt, and fear. Yet, the Apostle John reminds us that our joy is not dependent on our circumstances, but on the reality of Jesus Christ, the Word of life. This joy, which is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, is not a fleeting emotion but a deep-seated assurance in the goodness and faithfulness of God. It is this joy that gives us the strength to face the storms of life with courage and hope.
The first aspect of this truth we need to understand is that joy is a choice. It's not something that happens to us, but something we choose. Even in the midst of trials and tribulations, we can choose to rejoice in the Lord. This is not a denial of reality or a form of escapism. Rather, it is a defiant declaration of faith in the face of adversity. We choose joy because we know that our God is greater than any problem we face. We choose joy because we trust in His promises. We choose joy because we believe in His love for us.
The second aspect is that joy is a gift from God. It is not something we can manufacture on our own. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. As we surrender to God, as we submit to His will, as we walk in obedience to His Word, the Holy Spirit produces joy in our hearts. This joy is not dependent on our circumstances. It is not affected by the ups and downs of life. It is a constant, steady, unchanging joy that comes from knowing and being known by God.
The third aspect is that joy is a testimony to the world. When we choose joy in the midst of trials, when we exhibit joy despite our circumstances, we are bearing witness to the reality of Christ in our lives. We are showing the world that our faith is not a fair-weather faith, but a faith that stands firm in the storm. We are demonstrating that our joy is not based on what we have or what we do, but on who we are in Christ. This joy is a powerful testimony to the world of the hope, peace, and love that can only be found in Jesus.
The fourth aspect is that joy is a weapon against the enemy. The devil wants to steal our joy. He wants to discourage us, to make us feel defeated, to make us lose hope. But when we choose joy, when we hold onto joy, we are resisting the enemy's attacks. We are declaring that we will not be defeated, that we will not lose hope, that we will not let go of our joy. This joy is a weapon that helps us stand firm in the face of the enemy's attacks.
Joy is not a luxury for the good times. It is a necessity for all times. It is a choice we make, a gift we receive, a testimony we bear, and a weapon we wield. It is a joy that is rooted in the reality of Christ, a joy that is not dependent on our circumstances, a joy that gives us the strength to face whatever comes our way. So let us choose joy, let us receive joy, let us bear witness to joy, and let us wield joy as we journey through the storms of life.
