Summary: I want to consider the aspect of the kingship, the sovereignty of Jesus Christ, as revealed in the few hours at the close of His life on earth.

Behold Your King

John 19:5 & 14

John 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

John 19:14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

I want to consider the aspect of the kingship, the sovereignty of Jesus Christ, as revealed in the few hours at the close of His life on earth.

1. HIS PRESENTATION AS KING.

A. His Entrance Into This World.

Matthew 2:1-2, Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

B. His Evangelism In This World.

1) He Preached About His Kingdom.

Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

2) He Prayed About His Kingdom..

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

3) The People Of His Kingdom.

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

C. His Exit Out Of This World.

Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

2. HIS HUMILIATION AS KING.

We can see this:

A. In The Cradle.

Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

B. In The Courtroom.

John 19:1-3, Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

C. On The Cross.

Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

3. HIS EXALTATION AS KING.

A. Exalted By The Soldier That Pierced Him.

Luke 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

B. Exalted By The Servant That Preached Him.

Philippians 2:5-11, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

C. Exalted By The Saved That Praise Him.

Songwriters have sought to praise Him with such lyrics as:

Crown Him with many crowns,

The Lamb upon His throne

All hail the power of Jesus' name,

Let angels prostrate fall:

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him Lord of all ...

King of my life I crown Thee now;

Thine shall the glory be;

Lest I forget Thy thorn-crowned brow,

Lead me to Calvary.

Oh, come and reign, Lord Jesus;

Rule over everything,

And keep me always loyal

And true to Thee, my King.

Conclusion: What does His Sovereignty mean to me?

His sovereignty means that every part of my life is to be brought under His control; every moment of my life is to be lived as He shall choose

His control takes over from mine. I follow Him.

I do not do what I choose, but what He says.

I do not do what the crowd dictates, but what Christ desires.

I crown Him, crown Him, crown Him Lord of all.
