Behold, Thy Mother!

By-Evangelist Gary Huckaby

(Preached at Antioch Baptist Church in Woodbury Georgia 5-11-2003)

Text

John 19:26-27

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

In the book of Exodus 20:12, we are exhorted in the ten commandments to Honor our mother.

Exodus 20:12; ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

In Deuteronomy 5:16 we find this promise for those who honor their Mother; "Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

Mothers

A mothers arms stretched forth in love,

A mothers heart contains heavens dove.

A mothers song brings such delight,

A mothers kiss last through the night.

I think of a mother so tender and dear,

I smile while thinking of little ones always near.

A mothers love is like a bright shinning light,

To those children who stumble through the darkness of night.

She listens to problems, and suggest a cure,

Because she remembers her problems, and her mothers cure.

I picture a mother who is loved by all,

I picture a mother as one that’s always on call.

I love my dear mother, and I hope you love yours,

Because we only have one, and that is for sure.

Eve The Mother of All Living.

Genesis 3:20,

"And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living."

Only two people have never had a Mother. Adam and Eve. Everyone else who has and does live has had a Mother. Even our Lord and Saviour had a Mother.

-Eve was first of all a woman. God made her a woman before He made her a Mother, and that is what a Mother is suppose to be, a woman.

-Eve was also a wife before she was a Mother. That is what a Mother should be a wife before being a Mother. God intended a Mother to first be a woman, and then a wife before being a Mother.

-Eve was also a sinner before she was a Mother. Her nakedness God had clothed, but she was now a sinner before she was a Mother.

-Eve was a sinner saved by the Grace of God before she became the first Mother. Everyone who has been or will ever be saved is saved by God’s Grace, and Eve was no exception. Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Eve made a terrible mistake in listening to the devil on that terrible day when she disobeyed the direct command of God. She listened to the devil, who caused her to doubt God’s Word. She chose to eat of the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge and evil. She then caused her husband to make his fatal decision when she presented to him the fruit from that tree. She didn’t force him, but caused him to chose either her or the Lord. Had Adam refused to eat of that fruit, she would have died and left him alone as he was before God created her. Remember too, that Eve was a physical part of Adam. "Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh."

-Eve looked forward to the Saviour and probably thought her first son would be Him, but he was not. Cain was not the Saviour, but Eve named him Cain which means "a man from God. Genesis 4:1 says, "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD."

Sarah, The Mother of Nations

Genesis 17:16;

"And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her."

Sarah was a beautiful woman. She was so beautiful that even kings and Pharaohs desired for her to be their wife. Genesis 12:11; "And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:"

Sarai was Impatient of divine delays, and attempts to anticipate the plans of providence, Compare Gen 15:4 with Genesis 16:2; "

Sarai Brings family trouble upon herself. Genesis 16:5,6
