Text

John 19:26-27

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

In the book of Exodus 20:12, we are exhorted in the ten commandments to Honor our mother.

Exodus 20:12; ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

In Deuteronomy 5:16 we find this promise for those who honor their Mother; "Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

Mothers

A mothers arms stretched forth in love,

A mothers heart contains heavens dove.

A mothers song brings such delight,

A mothers kiss last through the night.

I think of a mother so tender and dear,

I smile while thinking of little ones always near.

A mothers love is like a bright shinning light,

To those children who stumble through the darkness of night.

She listens to problems, and suggest a cure,

Because she remembers her problems, and her mothers cure.

I picture a mother who is loved by all,

I picture a mother as one that’s always on call.

I love my dear mother, and I hope you love yours,

Because we only have one, and that is for sure.

Eve The Mother of All Living.

Genesis 3:20,

"And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living."

Only two people have never had a Mother. Adam and Eve. Everyone else who has and does live has had a Mother. Even our Lord and Saviour had a Mother.

-Eve was first of all a woman. God made her a woman before He made her a Mother, and that is what a Mother is suppose to be, a woman.

-Eve was also a wife before she was a Mother. That is what a Mother should be a wife before being a Mother. God intended a Mother to first be a woman, and then a wife before being a Mother.

-Eve was also a sinner before she was a Mother. Her nakedness God had clothed, but she was now a sinner before she was a Mother.

-Eve was a sinner saved by the Grace of God before she became the first Mother. Everyone who has been or will ever be saved is saved by God’s Grace, and Eve was no exception. Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Eve made a terrible mistake in listening to the devil on that terrible day when she disobeyed the direct command of God. She listened to the devil, who caused her to doubt God’s Word. She chose to eat of the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge and evil. She then caused her husband to make his fatal decision when she presented to him the fruit from that tree. She didn’t force him, but caused him to chose either her or the Lord. Had Adam refused to eat of that fruit, she would have died and left him alone as he was before God created her. Remember too, that Eve was a physical part of Adam. "Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh."

-Eve looked forward to the Saviour and probably thought her first son would be Him, but he was not. Cain was not the Saviour, but Eve named him Cain which means "a man from God. Genesis 4:1 says, "And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD."

Sarah, The Mother of Nations

Genesis 17:16;

"And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her."

Sarah was a beautiful woman. She was so beautiful that even kings and Pharaohs desired for her to be their wife. Genesis 12:11; "And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:"

Sarai was Impatient of divine delays, and attempts to anticipate the plans of providence, Compare Gen 15:4 with Genesis 16:2; "

Sarai Brings family trouble upon herself. Genesis 16:5,6

Sarai Again disbelieves God’s promise. Genesis 18:12-15

Sarai was The ruling personality in the home. Genesis 21:10-12

In spite of her infirmities Sarai was honoured of God. Genesis 17:15

Sarai is Mentioned in the Hall of Faith. Hebrews 11:11

Jochebed, Mother Without Fear

Ex 2:1-10;

"And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she

hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid

it in the flags by the river’s brink. And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. ¶ And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water."

-Many mothers have given their lives for their children, and Moses mother was not exception in her willingness to disobey mans law to obey God’s law.

-Her labor to prepare an ark of reeds for her three month old baby.

-Her willingness to give up her son for God’s purpose and will.

-God’s reward for her faithfulness is that she got paid to raise her own son by the enemy of children.

Hannah, A Praying Mother.

1Samuel 2:1

"And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation."

1Samuel 2:19

"Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice."

Hannah was a praying woman before she became a mother. Her prayers to the Lord is why she became a mother. God answered her request with a son who was named Samuel. Although Samuel was dedicated to the lord as an infant and as Hannah let him go to be raised by God’s prophet Eli, she still followed her first child with more children. God will answer a woman’s prayers. He did Hannah! And He will answer yours.

When I was Pastor of Stateline Christian Church in the late 1980’s, we were having a special Sunday. It was the Homecoming of the Church, and we had a Church house full of people. After the morning services, we had a dinner in the fellowship hall, and then a singing group to preform after the dinner. Many visitors came that day and among them a young couple were visiting. In the middle of the singing concert we stopped to give the group a break, and had a testimony service. During this short section of our day we also asked for any prayer request, to which this young couple ask the Church to pray for them to have children. The had been married for several years and had been unable to have children, but wanted children. So we prayer, and they came forward and knelt at the altar and they prayed. Our deacons and myself knelt beside them and we all ask God to bless this family with children. About two months later, you know what they called to tell me? She was going to have a baby. God does answer prayer. So pray dear Mother!

Mary, Mother of the Saviour

Matthew 1:18

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to

Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost."

The most unusual Mother of all time was the Mother of Jesus. She had no contact physically with a man, but was found with child of the Holy Spirit. When the Son of God decided to come to this earth in human form, He chose the womb of a virgin maiden named Mary. The reason He came through Mary is so that God could take upon Himself a human body. A body that would be the sacrifice for the sins of the world. The Old Testament sacrifices could not take away sins. Only the blood of the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ could do that, and it did, and still will if one will come to Him for eternal salvation.

Mary was an important vessel in providing her body for the baby Jesus to grow and be born from, but Mary would tell you today that compared to the Son she bore that night, that she is not the one to save your soul. She just as we had to receive Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour too.

Mary, Behold Thy son.

John 19:26

"When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!"

At the foot of the cross we see several people standing or kneeling. A group of women, one who was the Mother of Jesus. Mary stood next to the beloved disciple, and in His agony on the cross, while the sins of the world were being placed upon Him, Jesus was concerned for His Mother. In one of the seven sayings from the cross Jesus tells His beloved disciple to take Mary as his mother, and for Mary to take this disciple as her son. Jesus in the epitome of suffering, and agony of soul was concerned for his earthly parent, Mary. Scripture tells us that these two lived together until Mary died. Jesus is concerned with Mothers, and so are we.

Are you a child of God today dear mother? What about you dad? If you died today do you know that you would go to Heaven? The bible tells us that we can know that we have eternal life in 1John 5:13.

Receive Christ as your Lord and Saviour today. Do it NOW! You will be eternally glad that you did.
