Summary: When we start to become dependent on man, we are no longer dependent on God.

The base text for this message is in Jeremiah 17:5-10. When we start to become dependent on man, we become less dependent on God. In fact, we eventually become far away from His presence. We no longer have a firm foundation. So then when man fails us and deceives us, we are alone. We have nowhere to go. We feel abandoned, lost, and confused. We are made of clay. But God has given us a heart of flesh. Not of stone. When a loved one betrays us, it damages our heart. We are emotional beings. God made us that way. And, that’s why God says the heart is deceitful above all things. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23 to guard your heart above everything. That does not mean we cannot love one another. But it means to walk in wisdom. Use discernment. In Proverbs 1:7 we find that the fear (reverence) of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom. Now, I want you to turn with me to James 1:5. If any of us lack wisdom, then we should run to the source. If you ask the Father for wisdom, He will give it to you.

2 Timothy 2:15 tells us not to be ashamed of the truth of God. But study diligently to show yourself approved. I don’t need man’s approval. But I want to be approved by God. You didn’t come here to see me, but you came here to be edified. I didn’t come here to please you. We came to receive instruction from the Holy Spirit. We came to be transformed. We came because we need the presence of God. We came to say, “Hallelujah!” We came to say, “Amen,” to the promises of God because they are forever amen.

Isaiah 53:6 says that we all, like sheep, have gone astray. We have sought after our own way. We have sought refuge from within ourselves but we cannot find it. But it says all our iniquity was placed on Jesus at the cross of Calvary. Verse 7 says, “He was oppressed and afflicted yet he opened not his mouth…”

We are not perfect, glory to God, but we have an advocate named Christ Jesus. He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. On Facebook, there’s an unfriend button. But with Jesus, you don’t have to worry about that. Jesus will never unfriend you. He will be with you in the good times and the bad. He has already won all of your battles for you. Are you connected to him?

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. But in all your ways acknowledge Him and he shall direct your paths.” Are you trusting in the Lord?

In closing, I ask you to turn to Deuteronomy 4:29-31 (read). I ask you to stand and close your eyes. We need God’s presence more and more. His word says if we seek his presence, we will find it. I invite you to seek his presence. Talk to him. Open your heart and humble yourselves before the presence of Almighty God.
