Summary: This Psalm is sometimes called "Israel Anthem of Prayer. It encourages us to pray when we are about to enter into a difficult time of situation. The message is not original with me. I'm not even sure who to attribute it to, I found it in some of my old sermon notes.

An Anthem of Prayer

Psalm 20

Intro.

A. Psalm 20 & 21 go together.

B. Both are battle songs. (One before & one after

the battle)

C. Psalm 20 is a prayer, Psalm 21, praise.

D. David was almost always at war.

E. This time he was fighting Syria. (II Sam.8)

F. This psalm called Israel's National Anthem.

I. Good to read before surgery or trial.

I. THE BELIEVER'S ENCOURAGEMENT. V1

A. We have someone to talk to.

1. From time to time we all need to talk to someone.

2. Husband and wife

3. Children and parents

4. Close friends.

B. God is a good listener.

Jer. 29:12  Then you will call upon Me and

come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you

(NLV)

1. You can tell him anything

2. Any time

3. Any where

C. He hears. Vs. 6

II. THE BELIEVER'S ENERGY. V2

A. Help that comes from the Lord.

Is. 41:10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will

strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my

righteousness.

B. David would look toward the tabernacle.

1. The place where he would meet with God

2. The holy place

C. He would look toward Zion - Jerusalem

D. We simply life our eyes unto the Lord.

Psa. 121:1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

E. We’ll find our strength in Christ alone.

Phil. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

F. An answer to our prayer. Vs. 6

III. THE BELIEVER'S EXPECTATION. V3,4

A. You have made your commitments

1. To Jesus as Lord

2. To Love him will all you heart

3. To serve him will all you heart

B. Or not….you need to make those commitments today

C. God will grant your hearts desires.

Psa. 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

D. God’s will will be done

IV. THE BELIEVER'S EXHIBITION. V5

A. We will rejoice in they salvation.

B.We’ll post our flag - Banner

1. Flags posted in battle

2. The Christian flag

C. Our banner of Love

Song 2:4 He brought me to the banqueting

house, and his banner over me was love.

1. People will know us by our love.

a. Love for God

b. Love for people

2. Not by the clothes we wear or the bumper

stickers on our car.

D. We should not hesitate to identify with our position.

E. The enemy needs to know who we are.

1. Blue & Grey

2. Red and blue

F. We should be known by our love for each other.

John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

V. THE BELIEVER'S ENTRUSTING. V7

A. Some trust in chariots & horses. (Physical)

1. Things we control

2. Money/wealth

B. We trust in the name of the Lord.

Psa. 16:1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

VI. THE BELIEVER'S ESTABLISHED. V8

A. While others are falling.

B. We are risen up, steady and sure.

VII THE BELIEVER'S ENTREATY. V9

A. Short Prayer "Save me”

1. Sometimes it’s all we need

2. Don’t be so worried about long and fancy words.

B. Peter, "Lord save me” (Matthew 14:30 When he walked on water)

C. Thief, "Lord remember me"

D. Woman, "Lord help me” (Matthew 15:25 Gentile woman who came with demon

possessed daughter)

E. Short prayers

1. Lord, save me

2. Lord, show me.

3. Lord, guid me

4. Lord, help me

5. Lord, strengthen me

F. He will hear us when we call. Vs. 9

Conclusion

A great Psalm for when we are facing something difficult.

Psa. 20:1 The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble;

It comes down to this.

Trust Him

Look at the beginning and end of this Psalm

Psa. 20:1 ¶ The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

Psa. 20:9 Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

Do not hesitate to call unto him.

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
