Introduction:
Abraham was a man that obeyed God
When we think of Abraham we think of the father of the Hebrew people
He became the father of that nation because he obeyed God
YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT FAR IN LIFE IF YOU NEVER LEARN OBEDIENCE
Gen. 12:4- Abraham obeyed God and left all he had for a land he knew not of.
Gen. 22:16- Abraham obeyed God by willing his son to be given as a sacrifice on the altar
Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son to obey; what are you willing to sacrifice?
1. Music
2. Friends
3. Places
4. Yourself
God proved to Abraham he would provide a lamb for deliverance, only because he obeyed God.
IF ABRAHAM HAD NOT OBEYED GOD, THERE WOOULD BE NO HEBREW PEOPLE. IF THERE WERE NO HEBREW PEOPLE, THERE WOULD BE NO JEWISH NATION. IF THERE WERE NO JEWISH NATION, THERE WOULD BE NO JESUS CHRIST TO THAT DELIVERED US FROM HELL.
Abraham is recorded in Hebrews 11 because he obeyed God in faith
Not because:
Had money beautiful
Wealthy well known
Sports ability smart
God used him because he obeyed!!
IF ABRAHAM COULD OBEY GOD WITHOUT THE WRITTEN WORD, WHY CAN’T WE OBEY GOD WITH THE WRITTEN WORD?
We have:
1. Christian School
2. Good church
3. Parents that love us
4. Pastor that cares (youth pastor)
Why can’t we obey God? Because we are consumed with ourselves!
That is why:
1. You can not wear the right clothes
2. You don’t listen to right music
3. You don’t go to the right places
WE THINK WE DESERVE WHAT WE HAVE. THE ONLY THING WE DESERVE IS HELL.
WE THINK WE HAVE A RIGHT TO DO WHAT WE WANT. WE ONLY HAVE A RIGHT TO HELL.
WE THINK WE HAVE A RIGH TO REBEL. WE ONLY HAVE A RIGHT TO GO TO HELL.
JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT HAS A RIGHT TO DO WHAT HE WANTS BECAUSE HE PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE TO DO IT!!
(You pay the price he did and you can deserve to do what you want.)
How many in this room know that you are saved?
We obey God in faith for salvation, but stop there:
1. Baptism
2. Soul-winning
3. Standards
4. Separation
5. Obeying our parents
6. Faithfulness
THE PROBLEM OF OBEYING GOD FOR MOST PEOPLE IS A SELF-PROBLEM. (I AM THE MOST IMPORTANT)
IT IS HIGH TIME WE START PUTTING GOD FIRST!!
TEENAGERS LIVES ARE SO BACKWARDS
1. NO ABSOLUTES
2. NO DIRECTION
3. NO AUTHORITY
TIME TO START PREACHING THE BIBLE AGAIN
How do you obey God? By obeying his word
John 1:1-“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Prov. 12:15
15The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
Prov. 3:1
3:1My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
Prov. 3:11
11My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
Ps 119:9
9Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Ps 119:9
9Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
Ps 119:11
11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Ps 119:35
35Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
Ps 119:80
80Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.
How do I obey God?
2. Obey your parents
3. Obey your pastor
4. Obey you teachers
5. Obey your elders (gray haired people)
THERE ARE SOME PROMISES IF YOU OBEY GOD:
1. You will prosper
Ps 1:1-3
1:1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
2. You will live longer
Prov. 3:1,2- “My son forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: for length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.”
Most people want to live a long life, yet they don’t live like they do
Obeying God will keep you from sin, which will keep you from premature death
James 1:15- “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
