Summary: This is the first in a series of pastoral ideals that Paul gives Timothy regarding the false teachings he would encounter throughout his ministry.
Abolishing False Doctrines
1 Timothy 1:1-20
I. Preach the Truth (v. 3-7)
a. Stop the false teachers (v. 3; Romans 16:17)
b. Remember the goal (v. 4-5; 1 Timothy 4:7; 2 Peter 1:16; Titus 3:9; 2 Timothy 2:23)
c. Men who will oppose you (v. 6-7; Titus 1:10-11)
II. The Law’s Purpose (v. 8-11)
a. The use of the Law (v. 8; McArthur)
b. Who the Law is for (v. 9-11; Jude 15)
III. Grace’s Purpose (v. 12-17)
a. Mercy for service despite the past (v. 12-13)
b. Faith and love supplied in abundance (v. 14)
c. Christ’s purpose (v. 15-16; Mark 2:17; Luke 19:10)
d. Grace’s Supplier (v. 17)
IV. Keep the Faith (v. 18-20)
a. Avoid spiritual disaster—i.e., shipwreck (v. 18-19; 1 Timothy 6:12)
b. Remove the blasphemers (v. 20; 1 Corinthians 5:5)
