Summary: A Mother’s Day message for visitors and members that have a Roman Catholic background
A Message from Mary,
the Mother of Christ.
John 2:1-5
Introduction:
Mothers. What can we say about them? Everything good and nothing bad.
Eight-year-old Mary wrote her mother a note for Mother’s Day. "Dear Mother, here is the box of candy I bought you for Mother’s Day. IT IS VERY GOOD CANDY. I KNOW, BECAUSE I ALREADY AT 3 PIECES."
Eight-year-old Carol also wrote her mother said, "DEAR MOTHER, HERE ARE 2 ASPIRINS. HAVE A HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY."
Text: John 2:1-5
1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
Her message to them and to us is simple:
“Whatever He says to you, do it.”
I.What should we know about Mary?
• She was pleasing to God
• She was a virgin when she delivered Jesus.
• She was the mother to several more children.
• She was honored and loved by Jesus
• He was at the wedding in Cana and Honored
His mother’s request by saving the party
• On the cross, He made sure that John was
going to take care of her.
On the cross, Jesus was bearing the weight of the sins of the whole world on His shoulders, and yet He saw to it to make sure His mother is taken care of after He is gone! As God, Jesus is dealing w/ eternal matters, but as a man, He’s showing all of us today how important it is to take care and love our mothers!
• The Catholic church and others have raised Mary to the position of Co-Savior with Jesus.
• Mary does NOT have the authority to offer salvation to anyone. She was the first one to say that.
II.What did Mary command?
• This is the only time in scripture that we read of Mary, the mother of Christ giving a command.
• She said “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
III.What did Jesus say to us?
• He said “I am THE way, the truth and the life”
• John 14
• Not A way, but THE way.
• The only way
“Whatever He says to you, do it.”
• In John 3:36, Jesus tells us to believe in Him for salvation
• He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
• Believe in Jesus, not the church
• Not a preacher
• Not a denomination.
• He gives us Eternal life
• John 10:28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
• Our salvation is secured in Christ, not our works or how many rituals we do.
• It cannot be lost!
• Jesus said that if we reject Him, or His word, we are doomed
• John 12:48-49
• He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me.
• There is no loophole for this law
Mary knew all these things to be true of Jesus, Her savior
IV.Preacher, What does all this have to do with me on Mother’s Day?
• Mothers: Teach your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews to listen to the words of Jesus and obey
• Children: Honor and care for your mother.
• For everyone: listen to the command of Mary.
“Whatever He says to you, do it.”
