A Holy Family

Jesus

Luke 2:1-20

Intro.

We had been looking at the Holy Family

Joseph – Was obedient to God’s will

Mary -- Kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Now Jesus is born.

I. His birth was planned. Luke 1:6

A. At first glance we would think this verse is talking about the 9 months that Mary was pregnant with Jesus.

B. It is also a reference that God’s promises throughout the ages had come to fulfillment.

Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (5) To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

C. The birth of Jesus was planned from the time that Adam had sinned in the Garden of Eden.

D. The plan was communicated through the prophets.

Moses – Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Daniel - 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself

E. It was God’s plan to send His son to the earth.

Why? John 3:16

F. It was part of God’s plan the His Son would be born in Bethlehem.

II. His birth was perfect. Luke 2:7

A. Perfect in every way.

-Perfect in delivery

-Perfect in time.

-Perfect in Life

1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

B. He was God in the flesh; He would not be anything less than perfect.

1. His name is Emmanuel. (Matthew 1:23)

2. God with us.

C. To be imperfect would mean the He could not pay the penalty for sin.

III. His birth was proclaimed.

A. To the shepherds by the Angels. Luke 2:8-15

B. To everyone by the shepherds Luke 2:17

C. To the wise men by a star

D. By Jesus himself to His the masses

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

E. By the apostles sent by Jesus

F. By us as we witness of His coming.

IV. His birth was purposed. Luke 2:11

A. His purpose was to be the Savior of the world.

B. Mt 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

C. He came to meet our need for a Savior.

1. All have sinned. Rom. 3:23

2. The wages of sin is death Rom 6:23

3. He came to pay the price for our sin. 2 Cor. 5:21

4. By faith in Him we can have eternal life Romans 10:9-10

5. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Conclusion:

His purpose was so that you could be saved today.

Won’t you come to Him now?

His birth was planned

His birth was perfect

His birth was proclaimed

His birth was purposed
