Preach "The King Has Come" 3-Part Series this week!
Preach Christmas week
As we think about the 4th of July and what it means for the United States, let's also think about the true meaning of freedom we experience through Christ. We'll draw parallels between the Declaration of Independence and our spiritual liberation, focusing on the quest for freedom from sin, the price Jesus paid for our freedom, and our responsibility to live righteously.
Hey guys, Happy 4th of July weekend! You know, as we get ready to enjoy some BBQ, fireworks, and maybe even a day off from summer jobs or chores, let's take a moment to think about what this holiday is really about. It's not just about hot dogs and sparklers, right? It's about freedom.
But today, I want to talk about a different kind of freedom. A freedom that's even more important than the one we celebrate on the 4th of July. I'm talking about the freedom we have in Jesus.
I'm talking about the freedom we have in Jesus.
Let's start with a little object lesson. I want you all to imagine you're carrying a heavy backpack. It's filled with rocks, each one representing a mistake, a regret, a sin. It's heavy, right? It's weighing you down. But then, imagine Jesus comes along and takes that backpack from you. He sets you free from that weight. That's what He did for us on the cross.
Galatians 5:1 says, "Christ has set us free. Stand firm and do not let yourselves be burdened again by slavery."
John 8:36 says, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
And Galatians 5:13 says, "You were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."
Just like the American colonists who declared their independence from Britain, we can declare our independence from sin because of what Jesus did for us. But that freedom wasn't free. Jesus paid the ultimate price for it.
And just like the colonists had a responsibility to use their new freedom wisely, we have a responsibility to use our freedom in Christ to serve others and live righteously.
Well, think about that backpack again. Jesus took it from you, but it's up to you not to fill it up again. It's up to you to live in a way that honors the sacrifice Jesus made for you.
This 4th of July, as you're enjoying the fireworks and the BBQ, take a moment to think about the freedom you have in Christ. And think about how you can use that freedom to serve others, to love others, and to live a life that honors God.
"God, thank you for the freedom we have in this country. But even more, thank you for the freedom we have in Jesus. Help us to remember the price He paid for our freedom and to live in a way that honors that sacrifice. Help us to use our freedom to serve others and to love others. In Jesus' name, Amen."
