“he Hath Put A New Song In My Mouth"

Psalm 40:1–5

When the universe was formed “the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:7).

when God brought His people out of Egypt, Israel sang the song of Moses (Exodus 15).

One day, when redemption is complete, we will sing the Song of the Lamb.

David sings “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God.” I. This is a Song of Deliverance

2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay. David could sing because he knew a twofold deliverance: 1) Deliverance from the Guilt of Sin - brought me up also out of a horrible pit”.

The Hebrew reads: “He brought me up out of a pit of noise”

The Revelation of sin, The Accusation of satan, The Condemnation of the Sovereign. 2) Deliverance from the Grip of Sin - “He brought me up … out of the miry clay”.

The more the victim struggled to get free, the deeper he sank into the miry clay.

II. This is a Song of Direction and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. The godless are always described as lost. They don’t know where they have come from, where they are, where they are going; but it is quite different for the Christian. Direction implies:

I) Our Position in Christ - “He [hath] … set my feet upon a rock”

The place of Security (Ex 33:22) it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

The place of Sufficiency (1 Cor 10:4) And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

The place of Serenity (Isa 26:3–4) Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. 4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: 2) Our Progression in Christ - “He … established my goings”.

What a Blessing to Find, Follow and Finish the plan of God

Ephs 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

III. This is a Song of Devotion

3 He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

Deliverance leads to direction, but direction to devotion.

1) The Devotion of Worship

3 “He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever” Westminster Confession; Luke 10:41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

2) The Devotion of Witness - “Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord” Where there is worship there is also witness.

Ex 34:29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. Conclusion - The question arises how this song can begin. David gives the answer. He said: “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry” “Waiting I waited for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.” There was Submission— “I waited.” submission to His saviourhood and sovereignty.

There was Supplication— “He … heard my cry.”

There was Solution - deliverance, direction, and devotion? The song of the new life.
