Core52 - King Jesus
Intro:
• King Jesus video from SermonCentral - “No Other King.”( https://www.sermoncentral.com/church-media-preaching-sermons/sermon-video-illustrations/no-other-king-6761-detail?ref=MediaSerps )
• The past two weeks we have seen folks give their lives to Christ and experience the death and resurrection of Jesus in baptism as well as welcome believers “formally” to the family at T&C.
o A family of three made their confession and were baptized into the death and resurrection of Christ.
o Another family came to us as believers to formally become a part of T&C family.
• In both circumstances, we witnessed their confession before the church that “Jesus is Lord and Savior.” Here at T&C, we repeat that confession along with them in a spirit of unity.
• While it’s never “run of the mill” or boring, we can get used to repeating that good confession and perhaps miss the universe-shaking power that is inherent in them.
o When these words are spoken, Heaven rejoices and Hell trembles.
• To confess Christ as Lord and Savior is to name him before heaven and earth as your king.
Jesus is an “All or Nothing” King
• Lego Jesus
Mark 8:29 NLT 29 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.”
• Jewish perception of Messiah (King) like David.
• Week’s memory verse:
2 Samuel 7:12–13 ESV 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
• Expectation that Jesus is the fulfillment of this promise.
• But Jesus’ plan didn’t meet their expectations.
• They didn’t get to choose what kind of King he would be.
Mark 8:31–33 NLT31 Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. 32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things. 33 Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Matthew 10:32–33 NLT32 “Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.
• We don’t get to choose how Jesus is King.
• Jesus demands to be king of my life in every respect. He must be at the center of my life.
• He must be the form I pour my life into. Not some “sunburn lotion” I put on to save me.
Jesus is More Than a One-Time Decision
Philippians 2:9–11 NLT 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
• Once we have made that declaration of the Lordship of Jesus, a lifestyle must follow.
Mark 8:34–35 NLT 34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. 35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it.
Philippians 3:20 NLT 20 But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior.
