Summary: Proverbs 9

Proverbs 9:1-12

“Wisdom has built her house”

- Wisdom is generous (she gives riches, honor, life)

- Wisdom is hospitable (She invites all to listen and follow her).

- Wisdom protects (the protections a house offers).

“Forsake foolishness and live…”

- Wisdom has given the invitation; however, a response is required.

- Forsake means to turn away from something.

“He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself”

- Those who are opposed to wisdom won’t receive it.

- Those who are opposed to the Word of God, won’t receive it.

- Those who are opposed hate the one who is teaching / instructing, etc.

- A better term for shame here is abuse.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”

- Solomon repeats Proverbs 1:7 as he begins to close out his introduction by reminding his audience of this principle: wisdom begins with a right relationship with God.

“If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if you scoff, you alone will bear it.”

- Solomon returns to personal responsibility.

- We reap what we sow.
