David Faithful To Be Restored After Terrible Sin Lesson 6 Series

A. WHY DAVID GOT INTO ADULTERY: 2 SAMUEL 11

1. Didn’t fulfill his job. “The times when Kings go to war … David sent Joab … remained at Jerusalem” (2 Samuel 11:1):

a. Getting older.

b. His past reputation would help victory.

c. This battle was smaller than past.

2. Sleeplessness:

a. Walk on roof.

b. Bathsheba bathing.

c. Beautiful to behold (v. 2).

d. Inquired.

e. Wife of Uriah (on battlefield).

f. Sent messenger (v. 4).

g. She came.

h. She lay with David.

i. “I am with child” (v. 5).

B. DAVID TRIED TO COVER UP:

1. Sent for Uriah, his “mighty men.”

a. Interviewed about war.

b. Sent home to wife.

c. Gave him food.

2. Uriah slept at David’s quarters, “The Ark of God and the armies … open field … could I go home?” (v. 11).

3. David invited him to dinner … got him drunk … did not go home” (v. 13).

4. David’s letter carried by Uriah. “Uriah on the front lines … fiercest … pull back … be killed” (v. 15).

5. David – adultery, lied, deceived, manslaughter, involved others.

C. DAVID’S SINS

1. Marriage. “Mourning was over … brought her to palace ... became one of his wives … the Lord was displeased” (v. 26).

2. God’s message. “Rich man … many sheep … poor man … one lamb … rich man killed it for his guest” (12:1-4).

3. Response. “David was furious” (v. 5). “He must pay fourfold” (v. 6).

? Death of infant son

? Rape of daughter Tamar

? Murder of Amnon

? Death of Absalom

D. DAVID’S REPENTANCE AND RESTORATION

1. Seven day fast. “David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground” (2 Samuel 12:16, NLT).

2. David’s determination. “The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused” (v. 17).

3. Restoration. “He went to the Tabernacle and worshiped the Lord” (v. 20).

4. Next King. “David ... slept with her … gave birth to a son … Solomon” (v. 24).

E. TEN STEPS OF RESTORATION: PSALM 51

1. Plead the mercy of God. “Have mercy upon me … according to Your multitude of mercies” (vv. 1-2).

2. Thoroughly confess your sins. “My iniquity … I acknowledge my transgressions” (vv. 2-3).

3. Realize sin is primarily against God, only secondarily against others and you. “Against You, You only have I sinned” (v. 4).

4. Claim God’s judgment against sin. “That you may be just” (v. 4).

5. Ask for cleansing. “Purge me … I shall be clean, wash me … whiter than snow” (v. 7).

6. Remove sin completely. “Hide Your face from my sin” (v. 9).

7. Worship. “My tongue shall sing … my lips shall praise” (v. 14-15).

8. Ask for spirit filled joy and power. “Holy Spirit … joy of Your salvation” (v. 11-12).

9. Service. “I will teach transgressors Your ways” (v. 13).

10. Enjoy restoration. “You shall be pleased with sacrifices” (v. 19).

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
