CURING THE MONDAY BLUES

A 7-minute charge to flip your week from drained to driven

SEEING THE BIG PICTURE

TEXT: Call to worship:

“This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

PROLOGUE:

What day is Psalm 118.24 referring to specifically?

It’s one of those verses that sounds general until you dig into its setting.

The Context

Psalm 118 is the closing psalm of the Hallel (Psalms 113–118), sung by Israel during Passover. The psalm looks back on God’s deliverance and prophetically forward to the coming of the Messiah.

Just a few verses earlier (v. 22–23) we read:

“The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.”

Jesus Himself quoted those lines about His rejection and vindication (Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10–11; Luke 20:17).

The Day in Prophecy

So when the psalmist says “this is the day which the LORD hath made,” he’s not merely referring to any ordinary 24-hour period.

He is celebrating the specific “day” of God’s redemptive victory—the day the rejected Stone became the Cornerstone.

In New-Testament light, that means:

• Primarily: the day of Christ’s resurrection—the dawn of the new creation and salvation’s completion.

• Secondarily: every day of worship and rejoicing in that victory, especially the Lord’s Day (Sunday), which the early church associated with that resurrection (Acts 20:7; Revelation 1:10).

In Practical Terms

So, when you quote Psalm 118:24 on a Monday, you’re not misusing it—you’re drawing from its deepest current:

“Because the Lord made that day—the Resurrection Day—He also made this one.

Every sunrise since the empty tomb is stamped with resurrection authority.”

Every believer now lives in the light of that day the Lord made once for all, and therefore every day becomes holy ground for rejoicing.

If God made this day, then Monday isn’t a curse; it’s a commission.

1) RESET YOUR STORY: GOD IS ALREADY AHEAD OF YOU

“My times are in Thy hand.” (Psalm 31:15)

“Before you call, I will answer.” (Isaiah 65:24)

Your week isn’t random; it’s scheduled by a Sovereign. Walk into meetings like someone whose appointment was set in heaven.

2) CHOOSE YOUR FOCUS: PEACE IS A SETTING, NOT A SYMPTOM

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Peace doesn’t wait for your inbox to shrink; it arrives when your mind stays on Him.

3) FIGHT LIKE A WORSHIPER

“The joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)

“I will bless the LORD at all times.” (Psalm 34:1)

Joy isn’t decoration; it’s ammunition. Hum a hymn while you answer that hard email. Praise disarms panic.

4) WORK AS WORSHIP

“Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:23)

Your spreadsheet, steering wheel, or stethoscope is an altar today. Excellence is how believers say “Thank You.”

2 questions before each task:

1. How would I do this if Jesus signed my paycheck?

2. How would I speak if He cc’d this thread?

5) TRAVEL LIGHT—DROP THE WEIGHTS, KEEP THE YOKE

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us!” (Hebrews 12:1)

“Casting all your care upon Him.” (1 Peter 5:7)

“My yoke is easy… My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28–30)

Jesus won’t share your anxieties, but He will share your assignments. Trade burdens.

6) EXPECT VICTORIES IN SMALL INCHES

“Despise not the day of small things.” (Zechariah 4:10)

Great weeks are built out of faithful inches.

Today’s inch ideas:

• Apologize first.

• Send the encouragement text.

• Pray over your to-do list, pen in hand.

7) PEOPLE ARE THE POINT

“Let all your things be done with charity.” (1 Corinthians 16:14)

If love doesn’t grow, your week doesn’t glow. Pick one person to bless on purpose.

EPILOGUE

5-part Monday Prayer

“Father,

You own this Monday (Ps 118:24).

Fix my focus on You (Isa 26:3).

Fill me with joy-strength (Neh 8:10).

Receive my work as worship (Col 3:23).

Carry what I cannot and lead me to love well (1 Pet 5:7; 1 Cor 16:14).

In Jesus’ name, amen.”

INVITATION

Psalm 16:8 — “I have set the LORD always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
