“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Purpose: This a an inspirational statement that tells the listeners that following Jesus Christ is the only path necessary for knowing the Father.

How I would introduce the topic: Jesus makes what seems like an outrageous claim. “I am the only person you need to find God.” There is a three-fold message in what Jesus says here. He tells you the way to live. He reveals the truth about this world. He gives eternal life. Spiritually, there is no other path. No one, absolutely no one gets to the Father except through faith in Jesus Christ.

I. Jesus is the Way.

1. Jesus defined the “way” on the sermon on the mount. He broke it down in to parts: 1) the righteous temperament; 2) Righteous relationships with people; 3) Righteous relationship with God; 4) Righteous religious practice. In whatever walk of life you choose, the principle that Jesus sets forth apply. If you walk in this way, you will find that you will tend to be well regarded by people and that your path in life will be laid out before you without you having to do much searching.

2. Biblical support: ...but wise the person who builds his house on the rock. The rain come down, the wind blows against the house, but it does not come down because its foundation is build on the rock.

3. The point: The first thing you need to understand about Jesus is that he has laid out a way of life for those who follow him. Don't be fooled into thinking that religious practice (going to church, tithing, etc...) was Jesus' main goal. He wants his followers to be identified by their righteous lifestyle as he defined it.

II. Jesus is the Truth

1. Jesus always cut through the baloney to get to the heart of an issue. He cut through the Pharisees pretentiousness. He reminded people that the temple was a man made thing that would easily come down. He explained complicated truths with simplicity. He debated his enemies with conviction exposing their hypocrisy and deceit.

2. Biblical support: “Jesus did not need praise from people, because he knew what is in their hearts.”

3. The point: Jesus isn't only the truth, he shows us how to get to the truth. He demonstrates how to walk in integrity and how to identify an enemy to the truth. He shows us how to confront those who would lead others astray.

III. Jesus is the Life

1. Jesus didn't have wealth. By the time he is crucified, there is very little if anything left in the ministry coffers. Instead, he devoted his life to the cause of salvation. His life on earth was an adventure in confronting evil, in showing compassion, in leading people to the Father, in raising up people who would follow him. He was completely free from the meaningless distractions lead people astray.

2. “foxes have holes, birds have nests, I don't even own a bed.”

3. The point: If you want to experience eternal life, you have to be willing to put this one aside. You must life as much as you possibly can for the cause of Christ and follow that wherever it leads you. Eternal life is a life of adventure and sacrifice.

How I would conclude this message:

If you want to live a righteous life. If you want to live in the truth. If you want to be truly alive and and living a life of righteous adventure, then I would like to introduce you to Jesus Christ. He isn't the angry religious figure that others may portray him as. He doesn't promote the sedintary, boring life that others may lead you to believe is the case. He is the Way. He is the truth. He is the life. And, what a life it is.
