Walking With The Risen Savior

Luke 24:13-32

Maybe you have seen the television show “Undercover Boss”. It is a reality show that takes the owners and CEO’s of major corporations and put them in a disguise and send them out to work with the employees of their company. I watched one a while back where the CEO of “Roto Rooter” went from his cozy office out on the road with a technician and had to fix toilets and clean clogged drains. The low level employees begin to talk about the company and the things they would like to see changed. And at times they are brutally honest. I saw one episode where a lady was venting her frustrations about the CEO to…the CEO!!! Always at the end of the show the CEO will reveal his true identity (to the shock and sometimes embarrassment of his employees).

In our selected text we find a situation where Jesus was walking with some men who were talking about Him. They spent the better part of a day with Him and just before He left, their eyes were opened and they realized who He was. The key verse for this message is v 32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?This verse refers back to the events that are recorded in verses 13-31.These two men were walking on “the road to Emmaus” and they encountered a man and had no idea who he was.They were discouraged about the events of the past few days and began to share with Him their thoughts.Little did they know that they were walking with none other than Jesus Christ? God had hidden the fact that this was Jesus from these men. Jesus asked them “what they were discussing”.In verse 18 Cleopas, responded, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” Jesus asked “what things”.They began to describe Jesus and the things that He had suffered and His rumored resurrection. Jesus began to “reveal the scriptures” to these men and spent the evening with them. Eventually their eyes were opened and they saw Jesus for who He was. Jesus then left them and they said “our hearts burned within us, while he talked with us, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”Though these men were unaware that they were walking with Jesus, there is much that we can learn from their story.

Today I want to preach on the subject “Walking With The Risen Savior” .........These men said that their “hearts burned within them as Jesus opened up the scriptures”

The English word “burn” takes the place of two Greek words in this instance. Notice:

1.(ēn – ane) “I was”

2.(kaiō - kah'-yo) “to set on fire”

I have an intense desire to see Stockdale Baptist Church “set on fire” for Jesus! Folks, it can happen …it should happen! But it will not come as a result of

o New programs

o Reviving old programs

o A series of “revival” meetings

o Bible conferences

o Singings

o Or any gimmicks churches may use to attract people into the church

If we are to become a church that is “set on fire for Jesus” it will come when people truly encounter the Savior! Many of you have experienced that fire in the past but for some reason it has burned out. Maybe your fire has burned out and you don’t realize it just yet. Well, we find some evidence of that “burning fire” in our selected text today. When that fire is burning:

i. There Will Be A Desire To Connect With The Scriptures.

ii. There Will Be A Desire To Commune With The Savior.

Let’s let the scriptures prove those 2 points. This event happened on the day Jesus rose from the grave. The followers of Christ were confused and concerned and grieving the loss of their Master. These men were walking the Road to Emmaus. Jesus approaches them and joins the conversation. They tell Jesus the story of …JESUS!

They described His life - v19 …Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. - They also proclaim that they had hoped that Jesus was the Messiah - v21 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel:..........

Apparently, they had heard the prophecy concerning His resurrection - and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

They had heard from eye witnesses that He had been resurrected - v22 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; 23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.
