Sermon: Soul Care and the role of the Holy Spirit

Thesis: The Holy Spirit takes an active role in the life of the spirit filled believer to help care for their soul. He does this in many ways and His names reflect how He works in the life of the church, the believer and the unbeliever.

Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit and He kept that promise in Acts 2 and that promise is still for today. His promise is to empower you and the church to do the work of the Kingdom this promise is still relevant today!

Quote: The Holy Spirit is not a doctrine to be studied; He is a person to be experienced in power (Randy Clark)

Scripture:

John 14:15-18:

15 “If you love me, you will obey what I command.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—

17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Colossians 1:9-14:

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully

12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Question: Why did Jesus send the Holy Spirit to fill these Christians?

Answer: So that they could “Be Christ Like” and “Do the work of the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Listen carefully the Holy Spirit was not just given to us to be Christ like but to also do the work of the Kingdom like Jesus did! Please hear this you cannot do the work of the Kingdom without the Holy Spirit’s empowerment!

Introduction:

As I have studied the Holy Spirit and observed the work of the Holy Spirit. I continue to be amazed at this 3rd person of the Trinity.

I really want us as a church to go deeper in our understanding of the work and the role of the Holy Spirit in our own soul care and in power to do the work of the Kingdom.

As I look at the church in the United States as a whole today we could say, “Something is missing in the church of America?” It seems to lack influence, power, relevancy and cultural impact.”

How many of you would agree with me on this observation? Show of hands?

T.S. - As we study these names of the Holy Spirit and highlight their significance - It is important for you to notice that if we eliminate the Holy Spirit from our lives and churches we will also eliminate all the following things the Holy Spirit is, and does for you and I. To get more information on the work and the role of the Holy Spirit see the handout for today from the ushers.

1. The Holy Spirit is the Author of Scripture and our link to Truth.

i. 2 Peter 1: 20-21: 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

i. Our author Peter – A key disciple of Jesus who lived with him for over 3 years tells us Scripture came not by the man or prophet writing it or speaking it but from the Holy Spirit.

1. The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible!

2. Did you hear that?

3. The Bible was written over a period of roughly 2,000 years by 40 different authors from three continents, who wrote in three different languages.

ii. The Holy Spirit used them all.

i. This highlights what Jesus says about the Holy Spirit: He will guide you into truth.

ii. The Holy Spirit is the one who unveils truth/ No one else can! / He is the Spirit of Truth in this world:
